1850 patent by Joel Houghton of a hand-powered device.
This device was made of wood and was cranked by hand
while water sprayed onto the dishes. This device was both
slow and unreliable.

THE BUILD IN TYPES
 The build in types are normally stationary types which are
generally kept fixed in the kitchen.
THE FREE STANDING TYPES:
 They can be kept any place depending upon the necessity of
changing.
THE INTEGRATED TYPES:
 These dishwashers have a special drawer in the front side
which is available as per the matches the kitchen.
THE TABLE TOP TYPES:
 Obviously this type of equipment can be placed mostly at
table tops.
COMMERCIAL DISHWASHERS
 Large heavy-duty dishwashers
 Wash a rack of 25 glasses in just approximately one minute
 Types of commercial dishwashers including under counter, single
tank, conveyor, flight type, and carousel machines.
HOW DISHWAHER WORKS ?
• Cold water is piped into the
machine from your home
water supply.
• The heating element at the
bottom of the machine,
powered by electricity, warms
the water to a temperature of
30–60°C.
• An electric pump at the
bottom of the machine pumps
the water up through the side
walls.
 Slightly cooler water squirts up through holes in the upper, plastic
paddle, making it spin around too.
 After the water has bounced off your plates, it falls back to the
bottom of the machine, where it is heated and pumped around the
circuit again.
 The water squirts up through holes in the bottom, metal paddle,
making it spin around. The bottom paddle is made of metal because
it needs to withstand hotter temperatures at the base of the machine

MATERIALS
 The major components of a dishwasher are
made of steel and plastic. The basic
structure consists of a steel frame assembly
and a steel door panel. The racks that hold
the dishes are also made of steel.
 The inner box that holds the racks and
the washer arms is called the tub. It is a
single piece (not counting the piece lining
the inside of the door) that is injection-
molded in the plant. The injection molding
is done with pellets of calcium-reinforced
poly-propylene plastic.
 Motors, pumps, and electrical controls and
components are made by subcontractors in
accordance with designs by the dishwasher
manufacturer.
The following are the parts of a dishwasher :

Door gasket :- It is the inner side of the panel of the

dishwasher. It experience were and tear due to overuse
resulting in energy wastage, leaks and pressure
reduction and hence need to be replaced.

Upper rack :- It is where the dish is kept for

washing.

Upper spray arm :- It moves clockwise and

water in all the direction
Inlet water valve :- The inflow of the water from the
water supply takes place through inlet water valve.

Drain hose :- Dirty water flows out from the

drain hose.

Detergent dispenser :- Here the detergent that is

used for cleaning of dishes is stored
Heating element :- Heat water to the temperature of
65°c, which is needed to clean the utensils well and also
it kills the bacteria present on it.

Stainless steel tub :- The inside of a

dishwasher, called the tub, can be composed
of plastic or stainless steel.

Filter :- These keep wash water free of

food that could be redeposit on clean
dishes. There are 2 types: self-cleaning and
manual.
Hidden touchpad controls :- controls
mounted along the top edge of the door are
strictly a styling touch. They’re hidden when
the door is closed.

Electrical motor :- An electrical motor can

be a DC(direct current) or AC(alternate
current) typically composed of power supply,
axle , rotor, magnet and brushes.

Power supply:- Dishwashers usually require 60HZ

120V power supply assigned to them. The circuit
should be provided with a 20amp circuit breaker
installed in the cabinet for safety purpose.
Pump:- an electric motor powers the pump.
During the pump cycle, the pump forces water up
into the spray arms.

a) Reversible:- These pumps switch between pumping water to the

spray arms and pumping water to the drain by reversing the
direction of the motor.

b) Direct-drive:- The motor runs in one direction, so the direction of

flow is switched from spray arms to drain by a solenoid that opens
and closes the appropriate valves or switches one hose connection to
another.
PRECAUTIONS
 Dishwasher must be properly installed and located in accordance
with the Installation Instructions before it is used.
 Check Your Electrical Power-Connect to a properly rated,
protected and sized power-supply circuit to avoid electrical
overload.
 Use only detergents or wetting (rinse) agents recommended for
use in a dishwasher.
 Do not wash plastic items unless marked “dishwasher safe” or the
equivalent. For plastic items not marked, check the manufacturer`s
recommendations.
 Load light plastic items so they will not become dislodged and drop
to the bottom of the dishwasher – they might come into contact with
the heating unit and be damaged.
PRECAUTIONS
 To minimize the possibility of injury, when loading items to
be washed: Locate sharp items so that they are not likely to
damage the door seal, and load sharp knives with the handles
up to reduce the risk of cut-type injuries.
 Do not touch the heating element during or immediately
after use.
 Do not operate your dishwasher unless all enclosure panels
are properly in place.
 Do not tamper with controls.
 Do not abuse, sit on, or stand on the door or dish rack of
