Problem 1 [20 points]

Three single-phase step up transformers rated at 40MVA, 13.2kV/80kV are connected in delta-wye on a
13.2kV transmission line. If they feed a 90MVA load, calculate the following:

a. The currents in the transformer windings;

b. The incoming and outgoing transmission line currents.

Problem 2 [20 points]

A large 3-phase, 4000 V, 60 Hz, squirrel cage induction motor draws a current of 385 A and a total active
power of 2344 kW when operating at full load. The corresponding speed is accurately measured and is
found to be 709.2 r/min. The stator is connected in wye and the resistance between two stator terminals is
0.1 Ω. The total iron losses are 23.4 kW and the windage and friction losses are 12 kW. Calculate the
following:

a. The power factor at full load.

b. The active power supplied to the rotor.
c. The total I2R losses in the rotor.
d. The load mechanical power [kW], torque [kNm], and efficiency [%].

Solution:

Problem 3 [20 points]

We wish to make an asynchronous generator using a standard squirrel cage induction motor rated at 40
hp, 8 pole, 208 V, 870 r/min, 60 Hz. The generator is driven at 2100 r/min by a gasoline engine, and the
load consists of three 5 Ω resistors connected in wye. The generator voltage builds up when three 100 μF
capacitors are connected in wye across the terminals. If the line voltage is 520 V, calculate the following:

a. The approximate frequency generated;

b. The active power supplied to the load;
c. The reactive power supplied by the capacitor bank;
d. The stator current.

Solution:

Problem 4 [20 points]

Referring to figure below the following information is given about a generator:

EO= 12 kV
E = 14 kV
XS = 2 Ω
EO leads E by 30°.

a. Calculate the total active power output of the generator;

b. Draw the phasor diagram for one phase;
c. Calculate the power factor of the load.
Solution:

Problem 5 [20 points]

A three phase, unity power factor synchronous motor rate 400 hp, 2300 V, 450 r/min, 80 A, 60 Hz, drives
a compressor. The stator has a synchronous reactance of 0.88 pu, and the excitation EO is adjusted to 1.2
pu. Calculate

a. The value of XS and of EO, per phase;

b. The pull out torque [ft.lbf];
c. The line current when the motor is about to pull out of synchronism.
