The word SPACESHIP EARTH was coined by
BUCKMINSTER FULLER

SPACESHIP EARTH is a world view term usually

expressing concern over the use of limited resources
available on Earth and encouraging everyone on it to
act as a harmonious crew working toward the greater
good.

Earth is a finite world of

FINITE RESOURCES

Earth has become a light powered spaceship

 Nothing is added but energy.
 Resources are finite.
SPACESHIP EARTH
Earth can be compared to a spaceship travelling
through space as it cannot dispose of its waste or take
on new supplies.

Earth is essentially a closed system

This means that only thing that enters the earth’s
atmosphere is large amount of energy from sun, and only
thing that leave in large amount is heat.

Thus this concern gives rise to

SUSTAINABLE FORM OF DEVELOPMENT
CURRENT SITUATION
GLOBAL POPULATION By 2050 at current consumption we will need:
• c.1800 1 billion people • 8.5 planets to absorb our carbon dioxide
• 1960 3 billion
• 6 planets worth of steel
• Currently 6,377,776,644 (approx. 6.4B)
• 3.5 planets to sustain cement supply
• Gain 1 billion people every 11 years
• 1 billion people live below the poverty line • 3.5 planets to meet current timber demand
• 2 billion lack safe water, 3.1 billion sanitation
• 20% population is in developed world but they are
responsible for:
– 80% of commercial energy use
– 75% of timber
– 50% of fish and grain
– 40% of fresh water

• Clearly unsustainable…
• Global inequalities
• Scale of the challenge
• Managing ‘needs’ vs.
‘wants’
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
Sustainable design (also called environmental
design) is the philosophy of designing physical
objects, the built environment, and services to
comply with the principles of social, economic, and
ecological sustainability.

PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

• Efficiency – by using the products with higher
efficiency in order to produce less waste.
• Reduction – minimise the usage of fossil fuels and
non-renewable resources.
• Equity – green economics and fair trade.
• Sufficiency – reduce over consumption.
• System – evolve a proper strategy of usage and
design.
