Compaction
Compaction
5
FACTORS AFFECTING COMPACTION
• WATER CONTENT
• AMOUNT OF COMPACTION
• TYPE OF COMPACTION
• TYPE OF SOIL
• ADDITION OF ADMIXTURE
6
FIELD COMPACTION METHOD
• Soils can be compacted in the field by 3 method
1. Rolling
2. Ramming(impact)
3. vibration
7
ROLLING
1. Smooth wheel Roller(crushed rock , granular , sand)
2. Pneumatic tyred roller (both soils)
3. Sheep foot roller ( cohesive soil)
4. Lorries and Pneumatic tyred roller construction plant.
5. Track laying vehicles.

RAMMING
• A hand operated rammer consist of block of iron, about 3 to 5 kg
in mass, attached to a wooden rod. The rammer is lifted for about
0.30m and dropped on the soil to be compacted .
• A mechanical rammer is operated by compressed air or gasoline
power . It is much heavier, about 30 to 150 kg .Mechanical
rammers have been used up to a mass of 1000kg in some special
cases .
• Rammers are used to compact soils adjacent to existing
structures or confined area such as trenches, within plinth of
building etc. 9
VIBRATIONS
• In vibratory compactors, vibrations are induced in the soil during
compaction.
• The compactors are available in a variety of forms.
• When vibrator is mounted on a drum, it is called vibratory roller. These
rollers are available both as pneumatic type and the smooth wheel type.
• Another form of vibratory compactor is a vibrating plate compactor. Hand
operated vibrating plates are also available. The effect of vibrating plates
is limited to small depths . Their main use is to compact granular base
courses for highway and runways, where thickness of layers is small.

EFFECT OF COMPACTION ON SOIL
PROPERTIES:
• Effect of compaction on soil properties is,
1. Permeability
2. change in structure of soil
3. shrinkage
4. swelling
5. compressibility
6. stress – strain character
7. shear strength. 11
PURPOSE OF COMPACTION
• The principal reason for compacting soil is to reduce
subsequent settlement under working loads.
• Compaction increases the shear strength of the soil.
• Compaction reduces the voids ratio making it more difficult for
water to flow through soil. This is important if the soil is being
used to retain water such as would be required for an earth
dam.
• Compaction can prevent the build up of large water pressures
that cause soil to liquefy during earthquakes. 12
