STURCTURE OF A POWER SYSTEM

STURCTURE OF A POWER SYSTEM

Fig: Low voltage (LV) Distribution System

 Components needed for generation, transmission and large

scale distribution of electric energy form a huge complex
system termed as Electric Power System
 POWER SYSTEM: A branch of electrical engineering where
we study in depth for its design, operation, maintenance and
analysis.
POWER SYSTEM NETWORK

• Transmission system of an area or a

GRID
state

• Different grids interconnected

REGIONAL GRID
through tie lines

• Different regional grid

NATIONAL GRID
interconnected forms national grid
POWER SYSTEM NETWORK

 Each grid operates independently

 Power can be exchanged between grids over the lines during
sudden loss of generation or increase in load
 In India five regional grids are identified, each coming under a
regional electricity board
 Northern regional grid under New Delhi Electricity Board
 Western regional grid under Mumbai Electricity Board
 Eastern regional grid under Kolkata Electricity Board
 Southern regional grid under Bangalore Electricity Board
 North Eastern regional grid under Shillong Electricity
Board
REGIONAL GRIDS
POWER SYSTEM NETWORK
 Each state has a Load Despatch Centre.
 Regional load despatch centres coordinate the activities of
state load despatch centres
 The centres are equipped with computer based telemetry, data
processing and load frequency control equipments
 State Electricity Board
 Central Government Organisations like NTPC, NHPC, PGCIL
etc
 Installed generating capacity in India
 2300MW in 1950
 99000MW in 1997
 1,13,037MW in 2000
 Growth rate is about 7%
EVOLUTION OF NATIONAL GRID

 Grid management on regional basis started in sixties.

 Initially, State grids were inter-connected to form regional grid

and India was demarcated into 5 regions namely Northern,
Eastern, Western, North Eastern and Southern region.

 In October 1991 North Eastern and Eastern grids were

connected.

 In March 2003 WR and NER- ER were interconnected.

EVOLUTION OF NATIONAL GRID

 August 2006 North and East grids were interconnected thereby

4 regional grids Northern, Eastern, Western and North Eastern
grid are synchronously connected forming central grid
operating at one frequency
 On 31st December 2013, Southern Region was connected to
Central Grid in Synchronous mode with the commissioning of
765kV Raichur-Solapur Transmission line thereby achieving
'ONE NATION'-'ONE GRID'-'ONE FREQUENCY'.
