Understanding worksheet cells
 Worksheet
 Is a rectangular arrangement of rows and columns.
 Row
 Labeled w/ numbers

 Intersection of rows and columns.

Three kinds of data
1. Text
 These entries are usually labels such as name, age, remarks,
etc. that make a worksheet easier to read.
 Can be text/number combinations for items such as phone
numbers and account code.
2. Numbers
 These entries can be dollar values, weights, interest rates or
any other numerical quantity.
3. Formulas
 These are calculations involving two or more values such as
2*5 or A1+A2+A3
 Always starts with equal (=) sign

Working with ranges
Range
 Any group of related cells and it can be a single cell, a contiguous
collection of cells, or even entire spreadsheet.
UL:LR
 Used to referenced a range.
 UL – upper left corner address
 LR – lower right corner address
 To name a range, select the range, click inside the Name box,
type the name and then press enter.
 Click and drag the mouse over the range to select a rectangular
range.
 For noncontiguous range, select the first cell or range, hold
down Ctrl, and select the rest of the cells or ranges.

 Using the shift key


• To select a rectangular contiguous range, click the upper left
cell called the Anchor cell, hold down Shift and then click
the lower right cell.
 Using extend mode
• Click the upper left cell of the range then press F8 to put
excel in extend mode, then click the lower right cell of the
range. Press F8 again to exit extend mode.

Ctrl+Shift+Down arrow Select the contiguous cells below the active cell

Ctrl+Shift+Right arrow Select the contiguous cells to the right of the selected cells

Ctrl+Shift+ * Selects the rectangular area that includes every cell adjacent
to the current cell.
Ctrl+End Selects the last (bottom – right) cell in the worksheet that
contains data or formatting.
Ctrl+A or Ctrl + Shift + Spacebar Selects the entire worksheet
