Lumbrical Muscles

1st and 2nd lumbrical is supplied by

median nerve

3rd and 4th lumbrical is

supplied by ulnar nerve
Action of lumbricals

●Flex metacarpophalangeal joint

● Extend interphalangeal joints.
Claw hand
But when damaged is caused to
ulnar nerve, the 4th and 5th
lumbricals are paralysed due to
which
● Hyperextension occurs at
metacarpophalangeal joints instead
of flexion
● Flexion occurs at interphalangeal
joints instead of extension.
Causes of ulnar nerve damage
1- injury at wrist
• Flexor digitorum profundus muscle (present below
elbow on medial side) causes the flexion of fingers
• When ulnar nerve is damaged around wrist , the
profundus muscle is still being supplied by the ulnar
nerve so it does not lose its function and still takes part
in the flexion of the fingers.
• Due to claw hand the fingers(interphalangeal joints) are
already flexed so this additional flexion causes it to be
more prominent in case of wrist.
Causes Of ulnar nerve damage.

2) Injury to elbow
• When ulnar nerve is destroyed
at elbow the profundus muscle
loses its function and does not
cause additional flexion of
fingers so it is not that
prominent.
