Higgs Boson

Why is it so special?
Facts about Higgs Boson
 A spin zero massive particle Boson
(S=0,M=125GeV)
Proposed by Francois Englert, Robert Brout
and Peter Higgs in 1964.

 Discovered at CERN’s LHC in 2012.

 Nobel prize in 2013, shared by Englert and

Higgs.

 In 1993, Leon M. Lederman coined the

name “The God Particle”.

 July 2012 New York Times article, Bose

is described as the "Father of the 'God
Particle.
Why do we need Higgs Boson?

 Higgs Boson is the quantum excitation of Higgs field.

 Higgs field generate mass of fundamental particles

(quarks, leptons, gauge bosons) by interaction.
 What is Mass??

 Without Higgs field fundamental particles would be

massless.
 What if fundamental particles are massless?
No Structure Formation, we would not exist.

How do we observe Higgs Boson?

 Large Hadron Collider at CERN

Italy

14 TeV

ATLAS
CMS
 There are many reaction to produce Higgs boson at
LHC.
 Higgs Boson is very unstable particle,
decay to lighter particles
