Vertex Form of a Quadratic
Function and (h, k)
y = a(x – h)2 + k
STEPS:
1. Group together the terms containing x.
2. Factor out a.
3. Complete the expression in parenthesis to
make it a perfect square trinomial by
adding the constant and subtracting the
same value from the constant term.
4. Simplify and express the perfect square
trinomial as square of binomial.
Transform the ff to Vertex Form of a
Quadratic Function
y = a(x – h)2 + k
2
1. f(x) = x + 3x +2
2
2. f(x) = 3x - 13x -10
2
3. y = -2x + 12x – 17
2
4. f(x) = x + 5x +6

5. y= x − 3x + 3

a) Orientation of the graph: opens upward or
downward
b) Vertex point (h, k) : the highest or lowest point of
the parabola
c) Axis of Symmetry (h) : the line through the vertex
about which the parabola is symmetric, x = h
d) Maximum (highest) or Minimum (lowest) point
of the parabola (k):
e) x – intercepts: the roots of the equation of the
function
f) y – intercept: set x = 0
g) Domain: set of all real numbers
h) Range (k) : y ≥/≤ k
