Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your

faithful
And kindle in them the fire of Your love
V: Send forth Your Spirit and they
shall be created
R: And You shall renew the face of
the earth
Let us Pray:
O God, Who instructed the hearts of the
faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit,
Grant us in the same Spirit to be truly
wise and ever rejoice in His consolation.
Through Christ, our Lord. Amen
Come, Holy Spirit, come
Let thy bright beams arise,
Dispel the darkness from our minds,
And open all our eyes.
Revive our drooping faith,
Our doubts and fears remove,
And kindle in our breasts the flame
Of everlasting Love. Amen!
1. Activity:

1. What is my own idea/concept of

Spirit in my life and why?”
Christian Message:

What is the meaning of “spirit?”

The English
word spirit (from Latin spiritus "breath")
has many different meanings and
connotations, most of them relating to a
non-corporeal substance contrasted with
the material body.
 The word spirit is often
used metaphysically to refer to
the consciousness or personality.

 The notions of a person's spirit

and soul often also overlap, as both
contrast with body and both are understood
as surviving the bodily death in religion and
occultism,[2] and "spirit" can also have the
sense of "ghost", i.e. a manifestation of the
spirit of a deceased person.
The term may also refer to any
incorporeal or immaterial being, such
as demons or deities.[3] In the Bible, "the
Spirit" (with a capital "S"), specifically
denotes the Holy Spirit.
I. The Holy Spirit as Power:
Activity in Salvation History

A. The Holy Spirit: Giver of Life (most

basic activity)
1. Involvement in CREATION: Principle
of Existence—the POWER OF LIFE
= creation as the beginning of God’s
Self-communication and Self-
revelation (Gen. 1:1-2)
2. Holy Spirit as Creative Power
= “Spirit” means: “breath”, “blowing”,
“Wind” which indicate LIFE-GIVING
FORCE
= See the beginning of human
existence (Gen. 2:7)
B. The Holy Spirit and Our History
1. Relationship between “HUMAN
HISTORY” and “SALVATION
HISTORY”

= HISTORY is not mere “context”

(avenue/place) through and wherein
God communicates but a
CONSTITUTIVE part of God’s “creative
act” of manifesting/revealing Himself,
= history of the world is also HISTORY
OF SALVATION since history is marked
by our obedience or rejection to God’s
offer of Himself,
2. Holy Spirit’s ROLE in HISTORY
a. GUIDES and INSPIRES (example:
Abraham, Moses, etc.,)
Readings: Gen. 41:38; 2 Sam. 23:2; Joel
1:1; Judges 3: 10; 6:34; 11:29

b. VIVIFIES us with LIFE, DIRECTING us

to the fullness of our human and
Christian maturity-(1 Cor. 2:10, 12)
C. DWELLS in us as in a TEMPLE
working for our sanctification –(1 Cor. 6:
19)

c.1. TRANSFORMING us to become

ADOPTED CHILDREN (partakers of the
Divine Life of God)

c. 2. makes us SHARERS into the LIFE

of the Father and the Son
C. The Holy Spirit, the PERSON-
GIFT
1. Identity Development: Three (3)
“Occasions” (John Paul II)
a. Genesis: Creation—as “Wind” and
“BREATH” OF God that ANIMATES
LIFE
b. Isaiah and Jesus’ Baptism: as “GIFT”
to the MESSIAH (realized in Jesus)
Readings: Is. 11:1-3; 61:1ff; 48:16; Jn.
1:32
c. Jesus’ Farewell Discourse: as a
“PERSON-GIFT” to HUMANITY
Readings: Jn. 14:16-17; 16:13; 1Jn.
2:1

2. Holy Spirit as PERSON-LOVE in

the TRIUNE GOD – (Rom. 5:5)
= God as LOVE present within us as
leading us to love.
II. The Holy Spirit as WITNESS:
Activity in the Church

A. The Holy Spirit and Christ, the

Messiah
= VIRGINAL Conception of Jesus (Lk.
1:35)
= Jesus as the “Anointed One” (Lk. 4:18)
B. The Holy Spirit and the Church –
(Acts 2: 2-33)

= PENTECOST-Event: “Outpouring of
the Holy Spirit” – BIRTH of the Church
= Church exists by a “Divine Call” (
qahal, ekklesia)
= the Holy Spirit BEARS WITNESS
through the Church:
a. by VIVIFYING the church’s LIFE of Faith and
WITNESSING in the world

b. bears witness on Jesus’ behalf THROUGH

the Church –(Jn. 15:26)

c. moving the Church to MISSION and

MINISTRY –(Jn. 15:26-27; Lk. 24:46-49;
Jn. 20: 21-23; Mt. 28: 18-20; Mk. 16: 15-18)
St. Augustine's Prayer to the
Holy Spirit
Breathe in me O Holy Spirit that my thoughts
may all be holy; Act in me O Holy Spirit that
my works, too, may be holy; Draw my heart
O Holy Spirit that I love but what is holy;
Strengthen me O Holy Spirit to defend that
is holy; Guard me then O Holy Spirit that I
always may be holy.
A Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Come, Holy Spirit, replace the tension within us [or me]

with a holy relaxation.

Replace the turbulence within us with a sacred calm.

Replace the anxiety with us with a quiet confidence.
Replace the fear within us with a strong faith.
Replace the bitterness within us with the sweetness of
grace.

Replace the darkness within us with a gentle light.

Replace the coldness with us with a loving warmth.
Replace the night within us with your light.
Straighten our crookedness.
Fill our emptiness.
Dull the edge of our pride.
Sharpen the edge of our humility.
Light the fires of our love.
Quench the flames of our lust.

Let us see ourselves as You see us.

That we may see You as You have
promised, and be fortunate according to
Your word: "Blessed are the pure of
heart, for they shall see God." (Mt 5:8)

being the CREATIVE POWER of the BLESSED
Trinity: the GIVER OF LIFE (and who will RE-
CREATE our sinful life)

2. The Holy Spirit is a PERSON-GIFT acting as our

NEW HELPER/OTHER PARACLETE, especially
in bringing us to the TRUTH (about Jesus)

3. The Holy Spirit as a Person-Gift will Guide,

INSPIRE us to SEE God’s offer of himself in
Jesus, and EMPOWER us to RESPOND to him
in FAITH
4. Receiving the Holy Spirit makes us
SHARERS in the MINISTRY of Jesus
by FORGIVING people’s sins, making
people Jesus’ DISCIPLES through
BAPTISM, and TEACHING people to
OBEY Jesus’ commands
