The World When Rizal was Born
 Feb 19,1861- Russian Czar Alexander II
emancipated 22,500,000 serfs.
 June 19,1861- on the birthdate of Jose
Rizal, Civil War erupted in America due to
slavery.
 September 22,1863- President Abraham
Lincoln issued his famous Emancipation
Proclamation.
 June 1,1861- Benito Juarez, a full blooded
Zapotec Indian was proclaimed president of
Mexico.
The World When Rizal was Born
 1861- The Italians and Germans
succeeded in unifying their country.
 1871- Otto Von Bismarck of Prussia
defeated France and established the
German Empire with King Wilhelm as
first Kaiser of German Empire.
 England emerged as world’s leading
Imperialist power led by Queen
Victoria.

The Development of Filipino
National Consciousness
1. Opening of the Philippine Ports to World
Trade
- In1834,Spain following the examples of other
European countries, liberalized her economic
policy and officially opened Manila to world
trade, followed by Iloilo, Zamboanga, Cebu and
Legaspi.
- The opening of Suez Canal in 1859 which
shortened the route and travel time between
Europe and Philippines.
2. The Enlightened Middle Class (Ilustrado)
The newly emerged middle class sent their
children for higher learning to schools in
Manila.
From this group came the intellectuals and
leaders of the campaign for reforms.
3. The Secularization Movement
is a process by which the society is slowly
transforming from that having close
identification with the religious institution
to a more separated relationship.
This was considered to be the dawn of
Philippine Nationalism, particularly after the
execution of GOMBURZA.
