BIOPHYSICAL

PROFILE
The BPP was developed by
Manning in 1980
A Biophysical profile combines five
parameters into one assessment
- fetal reactivity
- Fetal breathing movements
- Fetal body movement
- Fetal tone
- Amniotic fluid volume
 Fetal heart and breathing record
measures short-term CNS function
 Amniotic fluid volume measures long-term
adequacy of placental function.
 Each item has the potential for scoring a
2, so 10 would be the highest score
possible
 Also called fetal Apgar because the
scoring is similar with that of the Apgar
score done at birth of infants
 May be done as often as daily during a
high-risk pregnancy
 8-10 = doing well
 6 = considered suspicious
 4 = denotes a fetus in jeopardy
 SONOGRAM – may be done to detect possible
retained fragments and tool for diagnostic
purposes.
 ASPHYXIA - Suffocation.
 NONSTRESS TEST – Most widely used primarily testing
method for assessment of fetal well-being.
 AMNIOTIC FLUID VOLUME – Important determinant
of fetal activity
 DOPPLER TECHNIQUE- Monitor is a hand-held
ultrasound transducer used to detect the fetal
heartbeat for prenatal care.
