Effects of Intermolecular Forces on

the Properties of Substances

1. Melting and Boiling Points

• If molecules stick
together more,
they'll be tougher
to break apart
• Stronger
intermolecular
forces → higher
melting and
boiling points
2. Viscosity
• The state of being
thick, sticky, and
semifluid in
consistency, due
to internal friction
• Stronger
intermolecular
forces → higher
viscosity.
3. Surface Tension

• It is a measure of
the toughness of
the surface of a
liquid
• Stronger
intermolecular
forces → higher
surface tension.
