“INTERFERENCE”
Refers to the influence of one
language (or variety) on another in
the speech of bilinguals who use
both languages.
“Interfere” v. – the phonology of
the speakers native language
interferes with the use of the
second language.

The ease or difficult of learning phonological
categories, experienced by a speaker of language
X attempting to learn language Y, has been
attributed by linguistics to:
1. the competing phonemic categories of
native language (N) and the target language (T)
systems ;
2. The allophonic membership of these
phonemic categories
The distribution of these categories within
respective systems
Second Language Acquisition
+ It happen when the
transfer makes learning - negative transfer,
easier may occur when both a.k.a interference, is
the native language and the the use of native
target language has the same language pattern or rule
form. which leads to an error
Example: Both French and or inappropriate form in
English have the word table, the target language.
which can have the same
meaning in both languages.
Phonological Interference
 It is a common type of interference, its most
prominent manifestations being a foreign accent.
 Sample;
Transfer from Dutch to English
Interference is a negative
transfer because the transfer is
the influence resulting from
similarities and differences
between the target language
and any other language that has
been previously acquired
 Themechanisms of interference may be two
types
Conscious, the student may guess what is the
correct usage because he has not learned or has
forgotten the correct usage.
Unconscious, the student may not consider that the
features of the langauges may differ or he may know
the correct rules but is insufficiently skilled to put
them into practice and so fall back on the example
of his first language.
