What is CAE?
CAE is a technology concerned with the use of computer
systems to analyze CAD geometry, allowing designers to
simulate and study how the product will behave so that
the design can be validated, refined and, optimized

Range of CAE
1. Kinematics Analysis: to determine motion paths and linkage velocities in mechanism.
Pro/E, Working Model
2. Finite Element Analysis (FEA): Solid Mechanics analysis (stress/strain), Heat Transfer,
Flow, and other continuous fields. Pro/Mechanica, ANSYS, CATIA, NASTRAN
3. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD): Fluid Simulation.

FINITE ELEMENT METHOD (FEM)

The Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is a

numerical method for solving problems
of engineering and mathematical
physics. Useful for problems with
complicated geometries, loadings, and
material properties where analytical
solutions can not be obtained.
PURPOSE OF FEM
Analytical Solution
• Stress analysis for trusses, beams, and other simple structures are carried out based on dramatic
simplification and idealization: – mass concentrated at the center of gravity – beam simplified as a
line segment (same cross-section)
• Design is based on the calculation results of the idealized structure & a large safety factor (1.5-3)
given by experience.
• Solution
– computes the unknown values of the primary field variable(s)
– computed values are then used by back substitution to compute additional, derived variables, such
as reaction forces, element stresses, and heat flow.

• Postprocessing
– Postprocessor software contains sophisticated routines used for sorting, printing, and plotting
selected results from a finite element solution.
A GENERAL PROCEDURE FOR
FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS

• Preprocessing
– Define the geometric domain of the problem.
– Define the element type(s) to be used.
– Define the material properties of the elements.
– Define the geometric properties of the elements (length, area, and the like).
– Define the element connectivities (mesh the model).
– Define the physical constraints (boundary conditions). Define the loadings.
CATIA
• CATIA delivers the unique ability not only to
model any product, but to do so in the
context of its real-life behavior: design in the
age of experience. Systems architects,
engineers, designers, construction
professionals and all contributors can define,
imagine and shape the connected world.

ANSYS

• Ansys Inc. is an American public company

based in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. It develops
and markets engineering simulation software.
Ansys software is used to design products and
semiconductors, as well as to create
simulations that test a product's durability,
temperature distribution, fluid movements,
and electromagnetic properties.
