What are political parties?
• A political party is a group of people who come together to
contest elections and hold power in the government. They agree
on some policies and programmes for a society with a view to
promote collective good
• A political party has three main components
1. The leaders
2. The active members and
3. The supporters
Functions of the political parties?
• To contest elections
• Forming policies and programmes
• Making laws
• Parties form and run government
• Role or opposition
• Shaping public opinion
DIFFERENT PARTY SYSTEMS IN THE WORLD
Single Party
System
• In one party systems, only one party is legally allowed to hold
effective power
• Although minor parties may sometimes be allowed, they are
legally required to accept the leadership of the dominant party
• This party may not always be identical to the government
• China is an example
Two Party
System
• Two party systems are in countries such as United States of
America in which there are two political parties dominant to
such an extent that electron success under the banner of any
other is almost impossible
Multiple Party
System
• Multiple party system is a system in which multiple political
parties across the political spectrum run for national elections
• It is more common in parliamentary systems than presidential
systems
• Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, United Kingdom and Norway
are the examples of Multi Party Systems
TYPES OF POLITICAL PARTIES
National
Parties
• A party that secures at least 6% of the total
votes in lok sabha elections or assembly
elections in four states and win at least 4
seats
in lok sabha is recognised as a national
parṭy
State
Parties
• A party that secures alteast 6% of the total
votes
in the state legislative assembly election and
wins
at least 2 seats is recognised as state party
