INTRODUCTION
• When perfect and complete communication does not take place
because of certain obstacle or other factors it is known as
communication barrier
• Barriers are divided into groups-Physical Barrier, Semantic Barrier,
Psychological barrier and Emotional Barrier
• Physical Barriers are the obstacles that prevent a message from
reaching the intended receiver may be outside and beyond the
control of the persons concern
TYPES OF PHYSICAL BARRIER
DISTORTION
• Distortion is the meaning of message getting lost during
handling process in communication while encoding and
decoding
• It is related to meaning of the message which is affected
by human perception
• In communication and electronics it means the alteration
of the waveform of an information bearing signal, such as
an audio or video signal in an electronic device
NOISE
• Noise is the disruption found in the environment of the
communication
• It interrupts the communication process and acts as a
barrier and it makes the message less accurate and less
productive
• It might even affect the message from reaching the
receiver
CAUSES OF PHYSICAL BARRIER
TIME AND DISTANCE
• If a message is not sent in inappropriate time, the message
will not have the effect that it should have been met
• The person from Asia will not be able to Skype a person in
U.S. if the time zone difference is wrong and the second pe
rson is sleeping
ENVIRONMENT
• Environmental factors such as wind, rain and other
environmental factors disturb the flow of message
• Natural voices present in the environment disturb
the communication
WORKSPACE DESIGN

• Large working area


• Closed office doors
• Separate area for people of different status
• It forbids team member from effective interaction
with each other
DEFECTS IN THE MEDIUM
• Defects in the medium used for transmitting
messages are external
• It is not within the control of the parties enga

• The telephone, postal system, courier or ele-
ctronic media may fail
INFORMATION OVERLOAD
• When there is too much information, some of it is
blocked in transit and may not reach the intended
audience
• Advertising and sales information is an example of
information overload

OVERCOMING PHYSICAL BARRIER
Email
• Emails are delivered extremely fast hence, it
avoids the physical barriers
• As teams disperse across the globe, email tends
to become a top form of communication
• Sending a lot of email makes sure you are
surgical in word choice
• By the use of emails employees can get
immediate answers to their questions and easily
track organized conversation online
• By the use of emails you choose the correct
word and stamp out ambiguity which is the only
step to make communication more effective
Open-Concept Offices
• Open-concept offices are designed to
improve workflow and communication
• It substitutes cubicles and corners to open
tables and shared conference rooms
• As organization recognises the benefits of
face-to-face interaction
• This concept has grown rapidly over the last
decade
Video conferences
• Video Conferencing tools continue to
improve each year with increased
video/sound quality at lower cost
• It becomes a tremendous asset in
organizations where regular in-person
meetings are impossible
• It gives the team face-to-face interaction
• It reduces company’s reliance on expensive
travels
• It improves workforce collaboration
CONCLUSION
• Communication is not a one way street
• To have others open to you, you must be open yourself
• You have to ensure that the statement you make is not only heard but also understood
