television host and a
sociologist.
• He is a professor emeritus
of sociology at
the University of the
Philippines Diliman.
• He currently pens a weekly newspaper column
for the Philippine Daily Inquirer, as well as
being a member of the board of advisor
of ABS-CBN Corporation.
 What is Fukuoka Prize?

• The annual Fukuoka Prize recognizes outstanding groups and

individuals for their work in preserving, developing and
celebrating the diverse Asian culture.

• The Fukuoka Prize will continue to be a means of showing

respect to those who have made outstanding contributions to
academia, arts, and culture in Asia. We intend, together with
the people of Fukuoka, to advertise to the world through our
city, the diversity and the distinctiveness of Asian culture.
• “She’s not with us tonight but our children are grandchildren
are. My wife Karina passed away in May, a few weeks after
she learned that I have been chosen to receive the Fukuoka
prize. She did not make it to the ceremony. This is for her.”

• David also dedicated the award to “peace-loving Filipinos”

after stressing the importance of friendship in his speech.
