THERMAL AND NON THERMAL PLASMA
 Thermal plasma have electrons and heavy
particles.i.e They have thermal equilibrium with
each other.

 Non thermal plasma is non equilibrium ionized

gas.
What is plasma medicine?
 An emerging field that combines plasma physics, life

sciences and clinical medicine. It is being studied

in disinfection, healing, and cancer. Most of the research

is in vitro and in animal models.

 Non-thermal plasma is used in this field.

 Hightemperatures are usually unwanted in
plasma medicine domain.

 Limited temperatures can enhance the production

of oxidizing species. This is a typical example of
plasma synergy.
Non-thermal plasma –Why?
Can be generated
atmospheric pressure No vacuum facilities are
required

Low ionization energies Energy selectivity and thus an

efficient way to use it

Energetic electrons that Formation of new reactive

enhance chemical processes species

Heavy particles low Use of these plasma in

temperature contact with heat sensitive
surfaces(skin)
Effects of Non-Thermal Plasma
Sterilization
A process to kill or entirely elimination of microorganisms from the surface of
material.
Types
 Thermal.
 Chemical.
 Radiation.
• Non-thermal plasmas are
characterized by low
temperatures.

• Non-thermal plasmas do
not sterilize due to
thermal effects.
Plasma sources

 Dielectric Barrier Discharge.

 Atmospheric plasma jets

Dielectric Barrier Discharge
 Consist of tow electrodes where heigh AC or DC
voltage is applied in KHz or Hz.

 One of the electrode is covered by dielectric which

limits current.

 Discharge gap is produced between electrodes.

 For treatment of skin disease, wound and tumer

treatment
Atmospheric Plasma Jets
 Collection of plasma sources.

 It use the gas flow to deliver reactive species generated in the

plasma to the cell

 Use hellium or orgon gas which are sometime mixed

with(<5%)of nitrogen, oxygen or water to increase production of
chemical reactive atoms and molecules.

 Application ranging from the inactivation of bacteria to the killing

of cancer cells
PLASMA JET
Wound healing
 Theplasma wound healing effect is obtaind
through a reduction of the bacterial load
count on the wound surface
 Plasma processing parameter such as
uv,heat affect the production of reactive
species
Cancer treatment

 The plasma treatment generate reactive oxygen and

nitrogen species.
 These species include ozone,Hydroxyl radical,nitric
oxide,peroxynitric acid.
 This inccrease oxidative stress on cells, which explain
collective killing of cancer cells.
 Electric field on the cells being treated by a plasma
jet can be high enough to produce electro portion
which directly influence the cell behaviour

Summery
• Electromedicine is a predecessor of Plasma Medicine

• CAP for biomedical applications are generated by applying electrical energy to a not directly
biologically affective gas

• Antibacterial effect

• Reactive species with biological potential are generated, which have biochemical applications

• There are 2 basic configuration of CAP devices: DBD and APPJ

• Effect depends on dose

• Micro-plasma also has a lot of applications

• Devices changed, but effect is not significantly different
