INTRODUCTION
Paint is one major segment of the surface coatings, which also
includes varnishes, enamels, printing inks and polishes.

The paint industry produces a huge variety of products that protect,

preserve, and also beautify the objects to which they are applied.

•Typical products include architectural coatings (e.g. house paints),

industrial coatings (e.g. automotive finishes, wood furniture and
fixture finishes), and special purpose coatings (e.g. traffic paints,
roof coatings).
CLASSIFICATION OF PAINTS…….

Paints can be classified into different types on the

basis of:

Their Function
Binder or Medium
Pigment Used
Sheen
Appearance
BASED ON THEIR FUNCTIONS
Primers or Undercoats : A preparatory coating applied before painting for
better adhesion
Finishing Coats: Polish to create a smooth and shiny surface

Sanding Sealer : fills small pits and pores.

Floor Paint hard surface finish for concrete or other rough floors,
e.g. Urethane Oil-Based Paint
Galvanized Iron Primer water-based anti-corrosive quick drying coat
applied on metal surfaces.
Spray Paints : smooth finish using spray guns
BASED ON BINDER OR MEDIUM
Acrylic
Latex Paint
Latex Polyvinyl Acetate (PVA)
Shellac Based Paint
Spirit Based Paint
Epoxy Paint
Polyurethane
Alkyd Resin
Tung Oil Paint
Linseed Oil Paint
Distemper
Emulsion
Chlorinated Rubber
BASED ON SHEEN OF A PAINT

The sheen of paint is the amount of light

reflected by the painted surface, depending on
level of sheen paints may be of four types:

Flat Paints
Paints with Satin Finish
Semi-Gloss Paints
Gloss Paints
BASED ON APPEARANCE
Eggshell
Multicolored
Matt
Iridescent Texture
Satin Finish
Wrinkle Finish
Semi-Gloss
Luminous
Fluorescent

QUAILTY IMPROVEMENT IN PAINTS

There are a number of ways to judge paint quality:

Wear ability
Covering ability
Ease of cleaning
Protection of the substrate
Environmentally Friendly
Aesthetic
Practical and Cost Effective
IGNITION PROPERTIES OF
PANELS COATED WITH
FINISHING FIRE RETARDANT
PAINTS UNDER EXTERNAL
CONDITIONS
FIRE RETARDANT PAINTS

Applied to the surface of any combustible

base to form a protective and decorative
fireproof coating.

Can effectively reduce the surface burning

rate of a combustible base.

Other benefits include: cost effectiveness

and handiness
TEST APPARATUS AND METHOD
RESULT AND ANALYSIS
CONCLUSION

 The ignition time is one of the most important parameters for

measuring the combustion properties of combustible materials in a
fire which directly reflects the fire risk of materials’

The results of the test indicate

 Edge ignition test: test pieces coated with unqualified paints were
ignited with 400s while the ones coated with qualified paints were
not ignited.

 Centre ignition test: when test pieces were still ignited when coated
with qualified paints . If the coating was less than 500g/m2 ignition
took place otherwise not.

 Panels that did not ignite in both the tests could be defined as higly
fire resistant.
ANTICORROSIVE
PROPERTIES OF
EPOXY -CARDANOL
RESIN BASED PAINTS
INTRODUCTION

 In anticorrosive coatings use of epoxy resin dominates over

synthetic resins due to its superior, strength ,low shrinkage,
better bonding with different substrates, good dimensional
stability and long term corrosion and chemical resistance.

 These properties have prime importance in construction

and building applications.

 only problem with coating made from epoxy resin is that

hey fail due to cracking during their service life.
Epoxy system consist of two component :

1) a base component
2)A curing agent or hardener

The base component is epoxy resin which is normally a

standard liquid epoxy resin DGEBA ( di glycidyl ether of
bisphenol A) .

The room temperature curing agents that are generally

used are polyamines and polyamides
Results of above studies showed
that :

the modification of the traditional epoxy resin when compared

with cardinal epoxy resin improves the properties of a film .
For example ,tensile strength and elongation are increased
while water vapour transmission decreased.

It is more effective and durable as compared to epoxy based

resin

CONCLUSION
1. MODIFICATION OF EPOXY RESIN WITH CARDINAL RESIN
HAS RESULTED IN THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE
PROPERTIES.

2. ANTICORROSIVE PROPERTIES OF THE EPOXY

CARDANOL RESIN BASED PAINTS ARE SUPERIOR TO
THAT OF UNMODIFIED EPOXY IRRESPECTIVE OF THE
PIGMENTS,FILLERS, AND ADDITIVES USED.

3. AMONGST ALL THE FORMULATED PAINTS PAINT
