If you have a question about how to locate the STEP file on a certain
website, please ask that question and we would love to navigate and show
you an example.
In FTC, building a robot after CADing may help reduce robot expenses
significantly!
Build
FLL FTC
Lego Mindstorm parts Metal, wood, 3D printed, etc. parts
Starter kits that are extremely helpful for competition Restrictive starter kits (better if you buy and explore
robots different parts and don’t just stick to the starter kits)

No tools required to assemble the robots A lot of tools (power tools, saws, files, screwdrivers,
wrenches, soldering machine, etc.)

Small number of wires Lots of wires from every motor, servo, phone, etc.
(extremely important to have good wire management)

FTC encourages you to build unique robots using industrial tools!

Programming
FLL FTC
EV3 software with block coding Block coding, Onbot Java or Android studio with Java
Soft-coded distance (calculated using time or inches) Timing is not recommended. Encoder are used which
gives us rotations that you turn into inches
Program different sensors (color, gyro, ultrasonic, touch) Image recognition using phone camera or webcam. More
sensors (touch, computer vision, limit switch, color, gyro)
available for use.

FTC uses real world programming using advanced algorithms!

Engineering Notebook (EN)
FLL FTC
• Optional • Required to be considered for any award
• Most critical component of FTC
• Documentation of your season’s journey
• Simple and Easy to read format, detailed, neat,
personalized, well structured
• Business Plan

The Engineering Notebook Contains:

• Problem Definition • Production
• Concept Design • Promotion
• System Level Design • Budgeting
• Testing • Planning
• Design Improvement • Outreach

The Engineering Notebook in FTC is a reflection of your team’s journey!
