STUDENTS’ PERSPECTIVES ON THE

EFFECTS OF HAVING A ROMANTIC

RELATIONSHIP ON ACADEMIC
PERFORMANCE
INTRODUCTION
In teenage life, having a peer to peer relationship is the most common
deeds of teenagers because some of them tend to seek attention and
belongingness from others. It seems like romantic relationship is the common
element in their teenage life and they crave to have an intimate romantic
relationship.
But, many people especially the parents sees the disadvantage on having a
romantic relationship while studying. Like for instance, their son/daughter
might be involved on dating and other love affairs rather than studying their
lessons or doing their home works. In order to prevent this, some of the
parents impose restrictions on their children to not getting involved in
romantic relationships while they are in young age and still studying.
OBJECTIVES
To explore the various perspectives of the engineering students of Jose
Rizal Memorial State University-Main Campus on the effects of having
a romantic relationship on academic performance.
To find out how having a romantic relationship affects academic
performance, both positively and negatively.
To seek for the dominant factors which encourage university students to
have a romantic relationship while studying.
To suggest some possible recommendations which can lead to a
successful academic life and maintaining a healthy romantic
relationship.
Research Methodology

Research Design
In order to answer the main purpose of this research study, it used
qualitative and quantitative approach on determining its answers. The
researchers used the validated questionnaire that was constructed by the
researchers namely; Ly Muychrea, San Vatanak, and Tep Sopheavatey
on their research study about the perspective of Cambodian University
Students’ regarding this matter.
Data Collection and Sample Size
In collecting data, the researcher randomly selected 100 engineering
students who are currently enrolled in Jose Rizal Memorial State
University-Main Campus located in Dapitan City, Philippines.
Data Analysis
In analyzing the data acquired, the researchers used Microsoft excel,
they used this in computing the quantitative data of the study.
FINDINGS AND DATA ANALYSIS

Findings

• 61% of the respondents are female and 39% percent are male.
• 70% are in the age range 16-19 and 30% are in the age 20-24 and also
majority of the respondents are currently 1st year students.
• Of all 100 respondents 63% said that they already have experienced
romantic relationship, while 37% don’t have one.

In this light, this study inferred that the students of Jose Rizal
Memorial State University specially to those who are enrolled in
engineering course thinks that having romantic relationship while
studying can have both positive and negative effects, but the positive
most likely to outweigh the negative in the essence that it gives them
confidence and motivation to study more harder that may result to better
performances in the class.
However, since most of the respondents are in the neutral side, the
researchers cannot definitely state whether having a romantic
relationship while studying provides positive or negative effects on their
academic performance. In this regard, the students stated that it only
depends on the partners if they could cultivate more positive effects or
otherwise negative will prevail.
Conclusions and Recommendations

As a whole , we cannot definitely determine whether romantic

relationship gives a positive or negative impact, as majority of the
respondents are in the neutral side. With regards to it, the respondents
provided the ideas that it only depends to the person being involved on
how they manage their time in studying and in their partner.
Since the researchers cannot generalized whether it is good or
bad, yet they can recommend that in order to have a successful
academic life and a healthy romantic relationship, the student should
treat their relationship as a motivation to study harder in order perform
better in class. They should wisely balance the time they will going to
invest in their studies and the time they will going invest to their
partner, in order to prevent the negatives effects to happen.
