SIMPLE RANDOM SAMPLING

A sample selected so
that each item or person
in the population had
the same chance of
being included.
Example:
Jane and Joe Miley operate the Foxtrot
Inn, a bed and breakfast in Tyron, North
Carolina. There are eight rooms available
for rent at this B&B. Lister below is the
number of there eight rooms rented each
day during June 2009.

*USE SPSS TO SELECT THE RANDOM SAMPLE

SYSTEMATIC RANDOM SAMPLING

A random starting point

is selected, and then every
kth member of the
population is selected.
Example:
Suppose the teacher wants to pick 5
students in her class to participate in their
Christmas Program and there are 20
students in the class.
*She decided to use systematic random sampling.
kth = number of students/number of samples
kth = 20/5
4th = 20/5

STRATIFIED RANDOM SAMPLING

A population is divided
into subgroups, called
strata, and a sample is
randomly selected from
each stratum.

CLUSTER SAMPLING

It is often employed to reduce the cost of sampling a

population scattered over a large geographic area.

A population is divided into clusters using naturally

occurring geographic or other boundaries. Then,
clusters are randomly selected and a sample is collected
by randomly selecting from each cluster.
