Jaya Shopping Center

Air Conditioning Case Study

Introduction to the basic
• Jaya shopping center combines 3 types of air conditioning systems:
• Supply
• Exhaust
• Combined
• In a combined system, the air is supplied and extracted completely mechanically
and the air pressure inside is maintained at a neutral state.
• This is considered as the most efficient system of air conditioning as it is
independent of the outdoor weather and environmental conditions.
Case Study
• The Jaya Shopping Center utilises the 3 types of ventilation systems in
different spaces of the mall.
• The supply system is used in the pressurised staircase system
• The exhaust system is used in the smoke spill, kitchen and utilities
room exhaust systems
• The balanced system is used in ducted ventilation and generator
room ventilation systems
Pressurized Stairwell
• Pressurization system is often required
in high rise and underground buildings.
• Pressurization of staircase occurs when a
constant volume of a fan pushing air
through any stair door that opens
creates a slightly higher pressure
condition compared to the function of
the space.
Smoke Spill System
• Usually used where any
sort of smoke and excessive
heat might be generated
(kitchens) and also to
prevent smoke going into
the emergency exit in case
of a fire.
• To avoid a massive pressure
difference due to constant
exchange of smoke and
fresh air, the inlet air supply
is carried out naturally.
Ducted Ventilation
• Used in the basement carpark of the mall, the
ductwork is evenly distributed throughout the
parking space with mechanical supply and
extraction facilities.
• The extraction facilities specially need to be
provided in order to remove the carbon
monoxide and other polluting gases that are
emitted by the vehicles.

Air Conditioning in Jaya Shopping Center
• The building consists of 8 storeys
of shopping and 4 storeys of
underground basement parking.
• The air conditioning is
completely controlled by AHUs,
Fan Cell Units and Split Units.
• There are a total of 14 AHUs
which serve the public access
area for the complex and
customer toilets.
• The chillers are located at the top
of the building, on the roof.
• The chilled water pumps
circulate chilled water from the
chiller to the AHUs and FCUs.
