What is Impressionism?
• It was created by Claude Monet and other Paris-based artist from the early
1960.
• It can be regarded as the first modern movement in painting.
• It’s founder were artists who refused the official, government exhibitions,
and rejected by the powerful academic art institutions.

In simple terms, Impressionism art is a style in which the artist

captures the image of an object as someone would see it if they just caught a
glimpse of it. They paint the pictures with a lot of color and most of their
pictures are outdoor scenes. Their pictures are very bright and vibrant.
In the yearly official Art Salon in 1863, many artists were not
allowed to join, leading to the public outcry. Then, “Salon des refuses”
was formed to allow the artists exhibits their works that had previously
been refused to the official salon.

artwork should be on the opticality of the creation.
• The artists took different methods but continued building on the
advancements of the previous art movement.

structural, symbolic, and spiritual elements that they felt were lacking
in Impressionism.

What is Pointillism?
• It was regarded as part of the Post-Impressionist movements. It was
developed by painters George Seurat and Paul Signac.
*George Seurat is the founder of Pointillism.

• Pointillist artist used only small dots of pure color to make an entire
composition.
• Pointillism has nothing to do with the subject matter of the other
painting, unlike the other art movements. It was only the specific way
of applying to the paint to the canvas that made it different others.
Originally, Seurat named the style of art as “Divisionism” but as
the painter died, Paul Signac continued the legacy work of Seurat then
changes it over time to “Pointillism.”

The smaller the dots, the clearer the painting just like the screen
resolution on a computer monitor.

Pointillism most often used dots of complementary colors to

make their subjects more lively.
