diagnosis, date of last
mating was 20 days back
when she was in heat.

F/H Satisfactory • Vulva was normal, pink and
moist mucous membrane
U/M Voided normally • Owner reported blood
tinged urine
R/H 38.4 Celsius
CMM Pink and moist
Abdominal palpation:
• Abdomen was tensed
Ultrasound examination:
• Few anechoic sacculation was noticed, possibility of an early pregnancy,
fetal resorption or uterine involvement.
• Advised to review in 7-10 days for rescanning.

Until than advised tablet Augmentin 375mg, ½ Tab BID – 7 days

Examination of external genitalia:

• Vulva edematous, hyperemic mucous membrane with
serosanguinous discharge noticed
Ultrasound examination
• Anechoic and hyperechoic area noticed in the uterus along with thickening
of uterine wall.
• Suspected for pyometra and cystic endometrial hyperplasia.
• Viable fetus visualized
• Approximate fetal age 40 days based on gestational sac diameter

Blood Picture: Neutrophilia
Thrombocytopenia

 Treatment

• Vetclox – 250 mg I/V

• Metronidazole – 500 mg I/V
• Ringer’s Lactate – 100 ml I/V
• Pantaprazole – 10 mg I/V
• Ondansetron - 1ml I/V

Supplementation
• Thrombup syrup – 5ml
 Medical termination of pregnancy
Mifepristone – Antiprogestins
• Dose – 2.5mg/kg BID for 4.5 days
• Availability 200mg tablet

Cabergolin – Anti-prolactin
• Dose – 5mcg/kg BID until expulsion of fetus
• Availability 250mcg and 500 mcg tablet

Misoprostol – PGE analogue

• Availability 200mg tablet, intravaginal

Examination of external genitalia:

• Vulva edematous with pale pink mucous membrane.
• Serosanguinous discharge noticed.

Ultrasound examination:
• Viable fetus visualized, feeble heart beat noticed
• Approximate fetal age 42 days based on head diameter.
Fetus was expelled within 48 hours.
CASE DICSUSSION
PREGNANCY TERMINATION IN BITCHES

• Purebred female is impregnated in a mismatch

• Male dogs of disproportionate size
• Owner does not want puppies
• The female may be too old or too young
• To save dams health in complication related to
metabolic disorders
 PREGNANCY PERIOD
1. Fertilization and ends with implantation
(Day 0 – Day 22 from LH peak)

2. Implantation and ends at the time of fetal

ossification (Day 22- Day 42)

3. Fetal ossification and ends at parturition ( Day

42 – Parturition)
