Elements of Literature

Character – The person in fiction works.

Antagonist – evil character in a story.

Protagonist – major or central character of the story.

Types of Character

Individual – type of character that possesses complex personality or become problematic as the story goes on.

Developing – dynamic type of character that changes by the end of the story.

Static – characters that don’t change.


Elements of Literature

Theme – message that the author wants to give its readers.

Plot – the sequence of different events takes place in a story.

 Exposition – information that is required for the reader to understand the story.

 Complication – point of the story where conflicts begin.

 Climax – the turning point of the story

 Resolution/ Catastrophe – when the story finally reaches an end and conclusion.

Point of View – something through which the events, people and story is viewed while reading that piece of writing.

Different types of Point of View

• Objective point of View – story teller never exposes anything about what the character is thinking or his or her
emotional condition.

• Third Person point of view – story teller is not part of the story’s action, but gives us idea what actually the character
is feeling.

• First Point of View – story is narrated by on character at a time.

• Omniscient & Limited Omniscient Point of View – narrator may know everything (Omniscient) or may not know
everything (Limited Omniscient).

• Places • Social condition

• Time • Mood

• Weather

Kinds of Conflict

Human VS Human – clash that sets one individual against another

Human VS Nature – communicates the relevance of solitary human life in the infinite plan of things

Human VS Society – qualities in tradition by which other people lives are being tested.

Human VS Self – inner clash.

Tone – the enthusiastic color or passionate


importance of work and gives amazingly
critical commitment to the full significance.
