Based on your observation
on the given data, how are
the two variables related to
each other?
Inverse Variation
Sample Problems:
1. y varies inversely as x. y = 3 when x = 10.
What is y when x = 6.

2. b is inversely prportional to the square root

of c, and b = 9 when c = 121, find b when
c = 81.
Phrases to remember:

“varies inversely”
and
“inversely proportional”

Inverse Variation can be modelled
using the formula:
1. y varies inversely as x.
y = 3 when x = 10. What
is y when x = 6.
Answer: y = 5
2. b is inversely prportional
to the square root of c, and
b = 9 when c = 121, find b
when c = 81.
Answer: b = 11
3. m is inversely prportional to
the square of n, and m = 3
when n = 6, find m when n= 2.
Answer: n = 27
4. If y varies inversely as x,
and y = 10 when x = 6, then
what is y when x = 15?
Answer: y = 4
5. The current (c) in a simple
electrical circuit is inversely
proportional to the resistance (r). If
the current is 80 amps when the
resistance is 50 ohms, find the
current when the resistance is 40
ohms.
Answer: c = 100
amps
In our country today, show the relationship of these
two terms applying the concept of inverse variation:

1. Economy Vs. Corruption

2. Peace and Order Vs. Crime Rate
3. Disaster Preparedness
Vs.
No. of Victims of Disasters
1. If y varies inversely
as x, and y = 32 when x
= 3, find x when y = 15.
2. If x varies inverse as y,
and x = 7 when y = 3, find y
when x = 9.
3. The time (t) it takes you to
get to campus varies inversely
as your driving speed (s).
Averaging 20 miles per hour in
bad traffic, it takes you 1.5
hours to get to campus. How
long would the trip take
averaging 50 miles per hour?
(express your answer in decimal)
4. y varies inversely as x.
y = 6 when x = 20. What
is y when x = 12.
5. The current (c) in a simple
electrical circuit is inversely
proportional to the resistance (r).
If the current is 40 amps when
the resistance is 25 ohms, find the
current when the resistance is 20
ohms.

Answers:

1. .6 hours
2. 10
3. 50 amps
