Unit3: CONDITIONAL
• A: GRAMMAR
Part 1 : The First Conditional
1. form
If + S +V( the present tense ) + O ,S + will + V + O

example: if it rains , we won’t go to the


cinema
2. uses
+ persuation
+example: if you help me with my
homework, I will take care your
younger sister

+ warning
+ example : if her father the first
conditional + example : If you walk
buys her a buy in her

• Other present tense :

a. If + present tense ,present continuous/ going to


b. If +present perfect / present continuous , future tense

• Ex : they are going to take their mother to the old house . If the transort strike
goes a head.
• “ should’’ : use “ should ” before the verb in the ‘if’ clause

If + s + should + v , future tense


Ex: if you should find yourself at a loose end over the holiday , you will
always be welcom our home.
• Inversion of conditional sentence

 form :

Should + S + V , future tense

 Ex : should it rain , we will stay at home and watch TV.


Part 2. the second conditional
• 1. Form

The basic form : If + S +the past tense +O , S + would/could/should…+V(inf).


The inversion form : Were +S +to V ,S+ would/could/should…+V(inf).
2.Examples

• Ex1: If I were you , I would go abroad.


• Ex2 : were you to accept my offer ,I’d
personally oversee the arrangement.
3. Uses
• This means that there is a small posibility that
this will happen. This situation and its result
are imagined.
• Note : “ Were’’ is often used instead of “ Was’’
in formal language.
Part 3. the third conditional

1. Basic form
 third conditional describes an unreal or an imaginary
situation in the past
 a perfect tense is used after “ it “
 “ would +have +pp” is used in the result clause.

if + past perfect would + have + pp

Ex : if I’d studied harder , I would have pass the exam.


• Meaning
 third conditional talks about the past
 we also use third conditional when we talk about events that
have no possibility of true since it had already happened.
• the modal verbs “might / could “ are common in this
sentence with form :

Had + S + pp Would + have + pp
Ex: had I known he was ill I’d have let them into the examination
Part 4. mixed conditional
• 1.Form
If + had(not) +Vpp, S +would/could/should… +V(inf).

Example: if I had finished my homework last


night , I wouldn’t be punished by the teacher
today.
2.use
• Mixed conditional is used to talk about past
events which have a result continuing in the
present .
Part 5. conjunctions
• We can use a range of conjunctions in conditional sentences as
well as.

Supposing:suggests an act of imagination

Unless = if …. Not
Ex: unless you really need me to , I
confunctions can’t take the time to reoganize your
desk today

Provided/providing, as long as , only if….


Ex: you can play in the livingroom as long as you
don’t make a mess
Part 6 . Wishes
1. Wishes about the present
A) Form:

S + wish +S +the past simple

 example : I wish I were good at english (in fact , I don’t speak


english well)
 example : I wish I were rich ( infact , I’m so poor)
B) Use : it is used when you want to wish something contrary to the present.
2. Wishes about the past

• A) form

S + wish +S + the past perfect

example: now I grown up , but I wish I had been a child.


• B)Use : it is used when you want to wish something contrary
to the past.
3. Wishes about the future.
• A) Form
S +wish +S +could + V(inf)+ O

example: I wish you could come me next week


• B) use : we can use ‘could’to refer to a future event or to
refer to something that is generally difficult or impossile.
4. Wishes using “would’’
• A) form

S + wish + S +would +V(inf)

example: my younger brother gets up very late. I wish


he would get up early.
• B)Use : we can use it when we complain about a bad habit.
• 5. beside , you should pay attention to the use
of “ If only ‘’. We can replace “ I wish ‘’ with

“ if only ‘’

example: If only I had much money.
