MEANING OF RAGGING

PRACTICAL MEANING OF THE WORD ‘RAGGING’ IS


TO TEASE. IT IS ANY KIND OF DISORDERLY
CONDUCT WHETHER SPOKEN OR WRITTEN OR BY
AN ACT WHICH CAUSES ANNOYANCE, HARDSHIP OR
PSYCHOLOGICAL HARM OR RAISES FEAR OR SHAME
IN A STUDENT.
TYPE OF RAGGING

There are two types of ragging-


Mild ragging-
Mild ragging is positive,advantageous. It helps in breaking the ice
between senior and the junior and enables them to gel up with each
other and interact.
Severe ragging-
Serve ragging is disadvantageous ,as it causes serious problems say
mental trauma or can also cause death in some of the extreme cases.
RAGGING CASES

• Malappuram, the first year students were stripped naked and forced to
clean toilet at the college hostal and were also compelled to drink
polluted water.
• Aman Kachroo, 19, was a student of the Rajendra Prasad Medical College
and Hospital at Tanda town in Kangra district since 2007. He died March 8,
2009, after he was ragged by his four drunk seniors.
• Karnataka, Nineteen-year-old Aswathi was allegedly force-fed toilet
cleaner by her seniors at the hostel of Al Qamal College of Nursing in
Kalaburigi on May 9, seriously damaging her internal organs.

ANTI RAGGING HELPLINE

A 24*7 national anti regging helpline was launched in 2009 June.


Since it’s launch the helpline had received 4495 complaint.

DATA OF DEATHS BY RAGGING EVERY YEAR

• 2005-2006-
11 deaths, 23 injured student, 12 mentally unstable, 5 victims
left college
• 2007-
89 incidents of raging, 11 death, 6 attempted suicide, 17 serious
injury cases
• 2008-2009-

345 incidents of ragging and 19 deaths.


• 2010-
435 cases of ragging. A first year girl committed suicide by consuming
sulphuric acid due to ragging
• 2011-2012-
375 cases of ragging registered
• 2013-2014-
646 cases of ragging registered in this year.
• 2015-2016-
14 incident of ragging in medical college. 2 deaths due to ragging in
medical college
• 2017-
646 complaints of ragging-

IMPACT OF RAGGING

Impact of ragging on academic-


• 25.5% loss of focus and concentration
• 17.8% missed classes
• 14.7% could not complete assignments on
time
• 12.3% reported fall in grades
• 5.5% others
CONCLUSION

Ragging is neither a custom not a rule,on the contrary it is punishable


criminal offence . Ragging is a problem of the students and by the
students and therefore the solution to it also lies with the students. With
ragging becoming rampant in colleges , it is high time that the Student
community awakes it’s consigns to this inhuman practice before more
and more innocent students become victims of it and before more and
more educational Institute are degraded by it
