Mode of Grouped Data

Mode of Grouped Data

A mode is that value among the observations

which occurs most often, that is, the value of the
observation having the maximum frequency.
Example

Number
of 0 1 2 3 4 5 6
Wickets

Number
of 1 1 3 2 1 1 1
Matches
Example

A survey conducted on 20 households in a locality by a group of students resulted in

the following frequency table for the number of family members in a household.

Family
Size 1-3 3-5 5-7 7-9 9 - 11

Number
of 7 8 2 2 1
Families
Example

Modal class (Because it has maximum frequency 8)

Family
Size 1-3 3-5 5-7 7-9 9 - 11

Number
of 7 8 2 2 1
Families
Example
Family

Example
The table below shows the weight (kg) of members in a sport club. Calculate the mode of
the distribution.

Exercise

The marks distribution of 30 students in a mathematics examination is given in this table.

Find the mode of this data.

Exercise

Marks of a group of students in a test are shown in the table below. Determine the mode.

Marks Frequency

31 – 40 11
41 - 50 18
51 - 60 30
61 - 70 27
71 - 80 10
Solution
Marks Frequency

21 – 30 4 = 60.5 – 50.5 = 10
  𝐷1
31 – 40 11
𝑀 0= 𝑙𝑏 𝑚𝑜+
