BIOMOLECULE

What is Biomolecule?
-Are molecules that occur naturally in living or
ganisms.
-It includes small molecules like primary and s
econdary metabolites and natural products.
-Biomolecules consist mainly of carbon and hy
drogen with nitrogen, oxygen, sulphur and ph
osphorus.
-Biomolecules are very large molecules of man
y atoms, which are covalently bound together.
Classes of Biomolecule
• These are 4 major class of biomolec
ule
• 1)Carbohydrate
• 2)Lipids
• 3)Proteins
• 4)nucleic acid
Carbohydrate
-Are primarily produced by plants and form a very lar
ge group of naturally occuring organic compounds
-Some common examples of of carbohydrates are ca
ne sugar, glucose, starch, etc. Most of them have a gen
eral formula , Cx(H2O)y, and were considered as hydr
ates of carbon from where the name carbohydrate w
as derived.
-Emperical formula: Cn(H2O)n
