SCREENING

The principle role of screening is to remove coarse

materials from the flow streams that could

1. Damage subsequent process equipments

2. Reduce overall treatment process reliability and

effectiveness

3. Contaminates waterways
Classification of screens
Coarse screen (Bar Racks)

• Coarse screens are used to protect

pumps, valves, pipelines from damage or
clogging
• Coarse screen can be divided into two
types
Hand cleaned coarse screen
Mechanically cleaned Bar Screen
Hand Cleaned coarse screen
They Are Also Known As Bar
Screens.
Bar Spacing Traditionally Of
Approximately 6 To 50mm And Inclined
At 45° To 60° To The Flow.
  Screens Are Cleaned Manually If
The Object Caught Is Larger.
The Main Advantage Is That No
Power Required.
The Main Disadvantage Is That
Manual Labour Required To Clean The
Screen.
Mechanically cleaned bar screen
• The design of mechanically cleaned bar screens
has evolved over the years to reduce the
operating and maintenance problem
• Many of the newer designs includes extensive
use of corrosion-resistant materials including
stainless steel and plastics.
• Mechanically cleaned bar screens are divided
into four principle types
 Chain driven
 Reciprocating rake
 Catenary rake
 Continuous belt
Chain driven screen

Chain driven mechanically

cleaned bar screens can
be divided into
 Front clean /Front
return
 Front clean /Back
return
 Back clean/Back return
Reciprocating Rake (Climber) Screen

 Reciprocating Rake imitate the movements of a

person raking the screen.

 The rake moves to the base of the screen,

engage the bar, and pulls the screening to the
top of the screen where they are removed

 The advantage is that parts which required

maintenance are above water line.

 The disadvantage is that screen may have limited

capacity in handling heavy screenings loads.
Catenary Screen
• A catenary is front
cleaned front returned
chain driven screen but
it has no submerged
sprockets
Continuous belt screen
• A large amount of
screening elements (rakes)
are attached to the drive
chains

• The number of screening

element depends on the
depth of the channels

• Hooks protruding from the

belt elements are provided
to capture large solids such
as cans, sticks and rags

Fine Screen

• These screens are used in preliminary

treatment
• Fine screen can be used to remove solids
from primary effluent that could cause
clogging problem
• Types of Fine Screen are
1. Static
2. Rotary drum
3. Step
Static wedge wire
• Static wedge wire have clear opening of
0.2 to 1.2
• It consist of small stainless steel wedge
shaped bars
• These screen should be cleaned by high
pressure hot water once or twice in a day
• These screens are used in small
wastewater treatment plant
Drum Screen
• The screening medium is mounted on a
cylinder that rotate in a flow channel.

• The waste water flows into 1 end of

drum and outwards through the screen
with the solid collection on the interior
side

Step Screens
• Step screen have fixed and movable
steps plate
• The movable plates rotates in vertical
motions
• Through this motion solids captures and
transported to the upper side
• Normal range of opening between the
screen plates are 3-6 mm

Microscreen
• Microscreening involves use of low
speed rotary drum screens operating
under gravity flow conditions

• The filtering fabric have opening of 10

to 35µm and fitted to drum periphery
