INTRODUCTION
What does OAW mean?

Oxyacetylene gas weldin

g is used to join mild ste
el. A mixture of oxygen a
nd acetylene, burns at 3,
500o C.
When the flame in contact
with steel, it melts the surfa
ce forming a molten pool, a
llowing welding to take pla
ce.
Oxyacetylene can also be u
sed for brazing, bronze wel
ding, forging / shaping met
al and cutting.

ACETYLENE REACTION

CaC2 + 2H2O → Ca(OH)2 + C2H2

C2H2 is produced in acetylene gas genera
tors by the exothermal transformation of c
alcium carbide with water.

Carbide is obtained from the reaction of li

me and carbon in the arc furnace.

ACETYLENE CYLINDER

Acetone disintegrates at a pressure of more

than 1.8 MPa,
i.e., with a filling pressure of 1.5 MPa the stor
age of 6m³ of C2H2 is possible in a standard c
ylinder (40 l). For gas exchange (storage and d
rawing of quantities up to 700 l/h) a larger sur
face is necessary, therefore the gas cylinders a
re filled with a porous mass (diatomite).
Gas consumption during welding can be obser
ved from the weight reduction of the gas cylin

REGULATOR

Reduce high storage cylinder pre

ssure to lower working pressure
Regulators maintain a constant torch pressure alt
hough cylinder pressure may vary
Regulator diaphragms are made of stainless steel

Teknik Pengelasan – LNG Academy 15

SETTINGS ON REGULATOR

Regulator pressure may vary with different torch styles a

nd tip sizes.

PSI (pounds per square inch) is sometimes shown as PSIG (pounds

per square inch -gauge)

Common gauge settings for cutting

– 1/4” material Oxy 30-35psi Acet 3-9 psi
– 1/2” material Oxy 55-85psi Acet 6-12 psi
– 1” material Oxy 110-160psi Acet 7-15 psi

Check the torch manufactures data for optimum pressur

e settings

HOSES

Add Graph Oxygen hoses are green in color and h

ave right hand thread.

Hoses are fabricated from rubber

Acetylene hoses are red in color with l

eft hand thread.

Left hand threads can be identified by a gr

ove in the body of the nut and it may have
“ACET” stamped on it

TORCH

Add Image
WELDING TORCH
A welding torch head is used to weld metals. It can b
e identified by having only one or two pipes running t
o the nozzle, no oxygen-blast trigger, and two valve k
nobs at the bottom of the handle letting the operator
adjust the oxygen and fuel flow respectively.

CUTTING TORCH
A cutting torch head is used to cut materials. It is
similar to a welding torch, but can be identified
by the oxygen blast trigger or lever.

Teknik Pengelasan – LNG Academy 18

ECONOMIZER

The Economiser is used to save oxygen and fuel gas when the welding or cutting tor
ch is not being used. When the torch is rested on the lever rod of the gas saver the f
lame is automatically extinguished. To relight, remove torch from the lever rod and
pass it over the pilot light which instantly ignites to its pre-determined flame

TECHNIQUE
OXY-ACETYLENE FLAME

Neutral Carburizing Oxidizing

Teknik Pengelasan – LNG Academy 23

Neutral
produced when the ratio of oxygen to ac
etylene, in the mixture leaving the torch, i
s almost exactly one-to-one. Causes a slo
w melt. It results in strong welds.
It’s termed ”neutral” because it will usua
lly have no chemical effect on the metal
being welded. It will not oxidize the weld
metal; it will not cause an increase in the
carbon content of the weld metal.

Teknik Pengelasan – LNG Academy 24

Carburizing
created when the proportion of acetylen
e in the mixture is higher than that requir
ed to produce the neutral flame.  Used fo
r soldering, welding, braze welding and si
lver brazing.
Used on steel, it will cause an increase in
the carbon content of the weld metal.

Teknik Pengelasan – LNG Academy 25

Oxidizing
results from burning a mixture which con
tains more oxygen than required for a ne
utral flame. It will oxidize or ”burn” some
of the metal being welded.
This type of flame isn't considered to be
practical for welding. It can causes issues
such as hardening at the weld, weld wea
kness and brittleness.

Advantages vs disadvantages

advantages disadvantage
- Easy to learn - much rougher in appearan
- Cheaper equipment than T ce
IG - Large heat affected zone
- can be used on sites which - Less suitable for stainless s
have no power supply teels and aluminium
- More portable than TIG
- Also can be used to cut
- All position
- No electrical requirement Teknik Pengelasan – LNG Academy 31
