Imagine this !!

You were driving a Ferrari in highway and you try

to overtake another car in front of you,
however upon overtaking there appeared to be
a cow on the road, so you suddenly hit on the
breaks and steered on the right, thus colliding
in the car you were overtaking.
• Describe what are the changes in velocity,
acceleration that took place in this scenario, as
well as, what kind of collision occurred?
LIGHT
and its properties
Objectives:
• Define Light

• Describe what happens when light is

reflected, refracted, transmitted and
absorbed.

• Investigate how light behave for each

phenomenon and differentiate them.
What is Light?
Light is a form of
electromagnetic
radiation with a
wavelength that can
be detected by a
naked human eye.
- It is a form of energy
which travels at speed
of 3 x 108 m/s.

What is Reflection?
It is the change in direction
of a wave front at an
interface between two
different media so that
the wave front returns in
the medium from w/c it
originated.
What is Absorption?
It occurs when light strikes a material and
the energy it carries is absorbed by the
atom of the material and is converted
into thermal energy.

Selective
absorption –
tendency of an
object to absorb
specific frequencies
of light.
What is Transmission?
It is the passing of light
(electromagnetic waves)
through a material
without being absorbed
or reflected.
What is Refraction?
It is the bending of light due to
change in its speed when it
obliquely passes two
different medium or there is
a gradual change in the
medium.
Light Refraction
Evaluation: Modified True or False

1. If I have red gummy bears and I point a green

laser to it, the green light will be transmitted.
2. Formation of rainbow is the combination of
refraction and reflection due to raindrops.
3. A wilted leaf would reflect green light.
4. When you look in a plane mirror, the image
you see is virtual and inverted.
5. Among the three liquids, water, lemon juice,
and milk, the milk transmits light the most.
Assignment
1. Can light be turned into matter? If
so, how?

2. How did Descartes and Newton

explain the emergence of colors
from a white light. Differentiate their
theories.
