INTRODUCTION

 What is PID?

fungus or parasite

SYMPTOMS & CAUSES
 Pain in lower abdomen and pelvis [Severe]
 Heavy Vaginal Discharge with an unpleasant
odour
 Abnormal uterine bleeding
 Fever, sometimes with chills [Severe]
 Painful Urination
 Pain or bleeding during intercourse

Many types of bacteria can cause PID, but the


two main causes are –
 Gonorrhoea

 Chlamydia
CURRENT INDIAN SCENARIO
 PELVIC health of a women is last in
list of worries.
 In India, approximately 1%
(3,915,700) of the population has
PID
 According to WHO women from
lower and middleclass strata are
more prone to such diseases as
compared to higher class
PROBLEM AREAS:
Too many stigmas around sex education and sexual health

Since it is influenced by both age of first vaginal


intercourse and the number of sexual partners the stigma
makes it very difficult to educate people

No Awareness about feminine hygiene and sexual health

Most UTIs and STDs(chlamydia and gonorrhoea infections


are asymptomatic ) go undiagnosed which result in PIDs
later

 No single diagnostic test for PID, clinicians rely on


nonspecific signs and symptoms for diagnosis.

Reluctance of women to admit the disease


WHY IS THIS ISSUE IMPORTANT
Untreated pelvic inflammatory
disease might cause:
 scar tissue.

 Development of infected fluid


(abscesses) in the fallopian tubes,
which could damage the
reproductive organs.
 It can cause:
• Ectopic pregnancy
• Infertility
• Chronic pelvic pain
• Tubo-ovarian abscess
PREVENTIVE MEASURES

 Use barrier methods of


birth control
 Have regular gynecologic
check ups
 Seek treatment
immediately if notice
symptoms of PID or any
sexually transmitted
diseases

ACTION PLAN
1. Target middle schools and
secondary schools
2. Target adolescent and teenage girls
and start educating them about
sexual health
3. Carry out awareness campaigns in
schools and colleges across the
region.
4. Encourage regular Gynaecologist
visits among young women
Reduce information asymmetry
 REMOVE SOCIAL STIGMA associated
with the disease
 Run ads and social media campaigns
to bring about awareness of the
symptoms and causes
“MOTHER-DAUGHTER” CAMPAIGN
•Females of a family will together learn about hygiene,
precautions and feminine hygiene from the
gynaecologists associated with the NGO
