INTRODUCTION
ABRAHAM MASLOW

(1908-1970)

Father of humanistic
psychology

Proposed this theory in

his 1943 paper “a theory of
human motivation”
Hierarchy of needs
Growth needs and Deficiency
needs
Physiological needs

These are biological requirements for human survival, e.g. air, food,
drink, shelter, clothing, warmth, sleep.
Safety needs
Once physical needs are set, safety needs take over
Personal including emotional
Health and well being
financial, job security
Safety of property against natural disasters,
calamities etc.
Law and order
Social needs
Need to be love and be loved
Need to feel a sense of belonging and acceptance
Sense of acceptance from -Friends, family, work
Esteem needs
Which Maslow classified into two categories:

(i) esteem for oneself (dignity, achievement, mastery, independence)

(ii) the desire for reputation or respect from others (e.g., status,
prestige)
Self actualization needs
Realizing personal potential, self-fulfillment, seeking personal growth
and peak experiences.
Growth motivated rather than deficiency motivated.
Cannot normally be reached until other lower needs are met.
Criticism of the theory

– May not follow a definite hierarchical order.

– The need priority model may not apply at all times in all places
– The level of motivation may be permanently lower for some
people.
