The atom project: What is it?
The aim - is to learn about the structure of atoms including:
• Basic structure in terms of protons neutrons and electrons and their position in the atom
Plan
• Isotopes, radio-isotopes and their uses
• Calculation of relative atomic mass from experimental data
• The evidence for energy levels and sub-levels within atoms
– Atomic emission spectroscopy
– Ionisation energy
Monitor
• Full electron configuration – using levels and sub-levels
• Solution of problems involving energy levels, with the use of E = hv
Evaluate
1. Collaborate to create a video revision resource
2. Assess your own work using peer grade
3. Assess others using peer grade
Plan
interactive learning resource that meets the following the
following requirements:
• Describes and explains the structure of atoms, ions and their isotopes in terms
Monitor
of protons, neutrons and electrons
• Discusses the various isotopes of the element, their abundance and their uses
• Describes the uses of some common radioisotopes
• Cover all of the learning objectives given in the objective list.
Evaluate
• Includes a workbook, or questions of some sort with work answers – this may
be in the form of QR codes to make it more interactive.
Plan
success criteria (rubrics) effectively.
• This process allows you to practice interpreting these in multiple
ways:
Monitor
– Evaluating your own work helps you to understand applying the criteria
– Evaluating others work allows you to see how others have interpreted
the criteria.
– Giving feedback to others allows me to check if your properly understand
Evaluate
the criteria, so we can improve.
– Getting multiple feedback can help you see where you could have
improved from multiple perspectives
Plan
• An actual presentation with all the group members being filmed.
• A YouTube documentary
• Stop motion video (whiteboard or other)
Monitor
• A PowerPoint presentation with diagrams, simple notes, photographs, an
embedded stop-motion animation, recorded voice notes spoken over the top
that is then screen grabbed as a video for submission
• You may have your video point to other resources so that the video is more
streamlined, this can be done using:
Evaluate
– QR codes
– A wiki with embedded video, animations, links to resources and so on
• Some combination of any of the above or entirely new things.

The atom project: Planning
Planning (goal setting)
Monitoring (assess your progress while you are doing the task)
Plan
Evaluation (how effective was your plan and implementation)
Asking questions to guide your project:
• Planning (goal setting)
• ‘What resources will I need to complete the project?’
• ‘What equations/ theory do I need to check?’
Monitor
• ‘Where do I start?’
• Monitoring (assess your progress while you are doing the task)
• ‘Am I doing well?’
• ‘Am I finding this challenging?’
Evaluate
• ‘Am I fulfilling my roile in the group?’
• Evaluation (how effective was your plan and implementation)
• ‘How did I do?’
• ‘Did my plan/ implementation work?’
• ‘How could I improve next time?’
