Introduction

• The Gamma function and Beta function

belong to the category of the special
transcendental functions and are defined
in terms of improper definite integrals.
• These functions are very useful in many
areas like asymptotic series, Riemann-
zeta function, number theory etc and
also have many applications in
engineering and physics.
• The Gamma function was first
introduced by Swiss mathematician
Leonhard Euler (1701-1783).
 Euler’s formula :-

Γn Γ(1-n) = ,0<n<1

 Duplication Formula :-

Gamma Function
Definition :
Let n be any positive

number. Then the
definite integral is
called gamma function of n which is 0
denoted by Γn and it is defined as

Γ(n) = , n>0
Properties of Gamma function
(1)Γ(n + 1) = nΓn
(2)Γ(n + 1) = n! , where n is a positive integer

Beta Function

Definition
The Beta function denoted by β(m, n) or B(m, n) is

defined as B(m, n) = (m>0,n>0)
Properties of Beta Function
(1)B(m, n) = B(n, m)

(2) B(m, n) =

Application of Beta & Gamma
function
 In
1968, a researcher, Gabriele Veneziano at
CERN(an European particle accelerator lab)
observed that beta function describes many
properties of strong nuclear force.
 Betadistribution where beta function is used to
determine average time of completing selected
tasks in time management problems.
 Gamma function is used in gamma distribution
which is used to determine time based occurrences,
such as life span of an electronic component etc.
 The Gamma Function is one commonly used
extension of the factorial function to complex
numbers.
