• Galaxies beyond our Milky way- resolved several
spiral nebulae(Andromeda nebula) into stars, identified some

Cepheids.

• Classification of galaxy types- he set up in 1926 a
classification system generally used as the standard.
• Hubble’s law and Expanding universe- “the red
shifts in the spectra of distant galaxies are proportional to
their distance”.
• i.e, the greater the distance of a galaxy from ours, the faster it
recedes. It was proof that the Universe is expanding.
