Demonstrates that galaxies existed

1924 outside Milky Way in his paper,

“Cepheids in Spiral Nebula.”

1929 Formulates Hubble’s Law, proving

that Universe is expanding.

1953 Dies at the age of 63 in San

Marino, California.
Contributions
• Galaxies beyond our Milky way- resolved several
spiral nebulae(Andromeda nebula) into stars, identified some
Having characteristics identical to a type of variable stars called
Cepheids.

Andromeda galaxy
• Classification of galaxy types- he set up in 1926 a
classification system generally used as the standard.
• Hubble’s law and Expanding universe- “the red
shifts in the spectra of distant galaxies are proportional to
their distance”.
• i.e, the greater the distance of a galaxy from ours, the faster it
recedes. It was proof that the Universe is expanding.
Honors
• Newcomb Cleveland Prize in 1924
• The Franklin Medal in 1939
• the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical
Society in 1940
• The Hubble Space Telescope- was named for
him.
