BOOK TASTING

There are a variety of books on your table.

-Pick a novel.
-Read the synopsis.
- Open to a random page in the middle and read 2
pages.
-Write down the page number, and any words that
you aren’t 100% sure of the meaning.
I can identify if a novel is a good fit for me.

There are 5 or fewer words per page that you don’t know/cannot figure
out.
There are some words on the page that are new to you, but you can
sometimes guess meaning using context, or still get the general
idea/jist.
You find it INTERESTING.
The text fits the purpose (fiction novel that you can discuss with myself
and classmates)
There are many reasons to find a good fit book, such as
engagement, interest, confidence and fluency.

If you feel like a book is too difficult, you may give up. Frustration
starts to build after each page is turned. Sentences like “I hate
reading” might start flying out of your mouth.

Fluency is the other key piece to building strong readers. You want
to be able to read using a “roller-coaster” voice and not a “robot”
voice.
