Motivational Quote
“Obstacles are things a person sees when he takes his eyes off his
goal.”
E. Joseph Cossman
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
 Abraham Maslow
developed the first and
most popular
motivational theories.
 He stated that motivation

is best explained in terms

of hierarchy.
What is Hierarchy
 A series of ordered groupings of people or
things within a system.
Levels of Hierarchy
◦ According to Maslow, there are five
levels of hierarchy relating to motivation:
5.Self-actualization
(control and freedom)
4.Esteem
(pride and self-worth)
3.Social
(need to belong)
2.Security
(a safe place to work and job security)
1.Survival
(food, clothing, and shelter)
Frederick Herzberg’s Theory
 Motivators: Recognition, responsibility,
achievement, advancement, and the work
itself.
 Hygiene Factors: Low salary, minimal fringe

benefits, poor working conditions, ill-defined

organizational policies, and mediocre
technical supervision.
Achieving a Motivated Work Force
1. Know thyself
2. Know your employees
3. Establish a positive attitude
4. Share the goals
5. Monitor progress
6. Develop interesting work
7. Communicate effectively
8. Celebrate success
What is Empowerment

Increasing the spiritual, political, social, or

economic strength of individuals and
communities.
Employee Empowerment
 Requires individuals to be held responsible
for accomplishing a whole task.
In order to create the empowered, three
conditions are necessary:
1. The system needs to change to the new paradigm
2. Everyone must understand the need for change
3. The organization must enable its employees
Teams Work
Definition of team: A group of people working
together to achieve common objectives and
goals.
Teams work for the following 3 reasons:
1. Many heads are more knowledgeable than
one
2. Each member has problem solving ability
3. Each member develop characteristics of
subconscious communication with each
other that allows them to do a better job
TYPES OF TEAMS

1. PROCESS IMPROVEMENT TEAM:

2. CROSS FUNCTIONAL TEAM
3. NATURAL WORK TEAMS
4. SELF MANAGED WORK TEAMS
PROCESS IMPROVEMENT OR
FUNCTIONAL TEAM:
Functional teams are composed of organizational members
from several vertical levels of the organizational hierarchy
who perform specific organizational functions. A typical
functional team will have several subordinates and a
manager who has authority to manage internal operations
and external relationships of a particular department or
division of the organization. Accounting, marketing,
finance and human resources are examples of functional
work teams. Functional team members usually have
different responsibilities but all work to perform the same
function of the department.
CROSS FUNCTIONAL TEAM

Cross Functional Team is a team where people from

different functions work towards a common goal. The
members of this team could be as subject matter experts
from different functions
NATURAL WORK TEAMS

Natural Team is a team which is not sitting together,

which do not have a face-to-face interaction. Here we
have people who were sitting in different time zones.
These are people from different cultures, different
language and they are working towards a common goal
using the help of technology.
SELF MANAGED WORK TEAMS

The members of the self-directed team come together on

their own with the minimum input from management.
For example, they see a problem; they come together to
form an informal team and work together towards that
goal.
Recognition and Rewards

Both go together to form a system for letting people

know they are valuable members of the organization.

Recognition is a form of employee motivation in

which the organization publicly acknowledges the
positive contributions an individual or a team has
made.

Reward is considered as tangible goods.
