What Is GIS?

▰ A system for capturing, storing, checking,

integrating, manipulating, analyzing and
displaying data which are spatially
referenced to the Earth.
▰ This is normally considered to involve a
spatially referenced computer database
and appropriate applications software.

What Is Mobile GIS?

▰ Mobile GIS is the expansion of GIS technology

from the office into the field..
▰ Mobile GIS integrates the following
technologies.
╺ • Mobile Devices
╺ • Global Positioning System (GPS)
╺ • Wireless Communications for Internet
GIS access
5

Technologies that make

mobile GIS possible
▰ Global Positioning System (GPS) technology .
▰ Mobile OS and device platforms such as smart
phones, Pocket PCs, PDAs (Personal Digital
Assistant), Laptops and Tablet PCs.
▰ GIS and navigation software for mobile platforms.
▰ Wireless Communications including Internet GIS
access, Wi-Fi, broadband and Bluetooth
capabilities.
6

Objectives of Mobile
GIS
▰ Fully Open Source.
▰ Compatibility with a large variety of mobile
devices (PDAs, Tablets, Cell Phones etc.).
▰ Highly configurable User Interface.
▰ Highly portability across different OS.
▰ Multi language support .
▰ Support vector, raster and various database
formats.
▰ Integration of GPS.

Mobile GIS Architecture

▰ The client side components are the mobile client
(laptop computer, PDA or mobile phone), a mobile
GIS Software and Global Position System (GPS)
attached to the mobile client, while server side
components are generally made up of one or more
different database.
▰ A wireless communication network ensures
communication between the client and the server
for data uploads and downloads, or information
request and response.
9

Benefits of Mobile GIS

▰ Improves efficiency and accuracy of field

operations.
▰ Improves completeness and accuracy of GIS
data.
▰ Improves quality of geographic analysis and
decisions .
▰ Easy access of GIS Data.
▰ Replace paper-based workflows.

Integration Of GIS With

GPS
▰ GPS or Global Positioning System is a constellation
of 27 satellites orbiting the earth at about 12000
miles.
▰ These satellites are continuously transmitting a
signal and anyone with a GPS receiver on earth
can receive these transmissions at no charge.
▰ Data collected in GPS receivers, it can be directly
transferred to a GIS System. This data will have
the spatial location as well as feature/attribute
data attached to it.
12

Google Maps
Navigation
▰ This application uses an Internet connection to
a GPS navigation system to provide turn-by-
turn voice-guided instructions on how to arrive at
a given destination.
▰ Google Maps Navigation requires connection to
Internet data (e.g. 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi, etc.) and normally
uses a GPS satellite connection to determine its
location.

How To Add Feature Of

GIS In Android
Application
▰ Android Studio(IDE) is used for he
development of Android application.
▰ Add the Runtime Android SDK dependency to your
application module as an Android Archive (AAR)
package.
▰ Android Studio provide Google Map Activity.
▰ After adding activity user can develop GIS feature
using Google Maps API.
14

Conclusion

▰ Hundreds of thousands of organizations in virtually

every field are using GIS to make maps that
communicate, perform analysis, share information,
and solve complex problems around the world.
▰ GIS apps work virtually everywhere: on your
mobile phones, tablets, in web browsers, and on
desktops.
