Understanding Migration Causes and History

Migration refers to leaving one's home and relocating to a new place, often due to push factors like crop failure, poverty, or war, or pull factors that attract people elsewhere like work opportunities or better living conditions. The two largest mass migrations in history were the Italian diaspora from 1861-1970 which saw 13 million Italians relocate due to economic hardship, and the partition of India in 1947 which displaced an estimated 20 million Hindus, Sikhs, and Muslims amid the formation of Pakistan as a Muslim state.

one’s home and making a
new home in another
place, in search of a work
or better living conditions,
etc.
Why do people migrate?
• The factors that inspire people to migrate are ‘push’ and
‘pull’ factors. The ‘push’ factors force people to leave their
hometowns while the ‘pull’ factors attract them towards a
new place.
• The most common reasons why people migrate:
• crop failure.
• drought.
• flooding.
• high crime.
• lack of services.
• lack of safety.
• poverty.
• war.
The two biggest mass migrations
caused in history

Are as follow…
Italian diaspora
• The largest documented voluntary
emigration in history was the
Italian diaspora, which migrated
from Italy between 1861 and 1970,
with 13 million people leaving the
country. The extreme economic
difficulties of post-war Italy and
the severe internal tensions within
the country, which led to the
migration of people in a huge
number.
Partition of India
• UNHCR estimates 20 million Hindus,
Sikhs and Muslims were supplanted
during the partition of India, the largest
mass migration in human history. The
partition was caused in part by the two-
nation theory presented by Choudhary
Rehmat Ali, due to presented religious
issues. Pakistan became a Muslim
country, and India remained a secular
country. The main spokesperson for the
partition was Muhammad Ali Jinnah. He
became the first Governor-General of
Pakistan.
