World Capitalist

System,
Neoliberalism, and
Inequality
Based from the book Understanding Culture, Society and Politics by
Gerry M. Lanuza and Sarah Jane S. Reymundo
World System Analysis
(Wallerstein)
• Core or Advanced Industrial Countries – do capital-intensive, high
value-adding production
• Peripheral Societies or Less Developed Countries – do labor-
intensive, low value-adding production.
Neoliberalism
(Plehwe, Walpen, Neunhoffer)
- Is a plural set of ideas rather than as a singular body of economic
theory.
- An attempt to challenge the growing power and influence of the
state over the market.
Social Scientist are divided
between:
- Globalization promotes economic growth
- Globalization is increasing the gap between the rich and poor

Distinction between:
- Globalization – a universal process of shrinking the globe into small
village.
- Globalism – an ideological version of neoliberal globalization.
Inequality
• The Economist – “Growth really does help the poor: in fact it raises
their incomes by about as much as it raises the incomes of everybody
else… In short, globalization raises incomes, and the poor participate
fully”
• von Hayek - “Inequality is not regrettable, but highly pleasing…
Those who attack the rich forget that most of them created jobs in the
course of becoming rich and so they have helped more people than if
they had given money to the poor”
Inequality
• Joseph Stiglitz – “ the respective deregulation and opening of
markets have not led to prosperity for all. On the contrary, today it is
clear that globalization has led to a large number of losers, especially
in the South, but also in industrialized countries, with only some rich
people having been able to benefit”
• Oxfam – “The wealth of the 1% richest people in the world
amounts to $110tn, or 65 times as much as the poorest half of the
world”
