Mission Statements
HUMANICS PROGRAM: The Humanics (AH) Nonprofit Administration Program
at California State University, Fresno is affiliated with Nonprofit Leadership
Alliance—a national alliance of colleges, universities, and national nonprofit
organizations dedicated to educating, preparing and certifying individuals to
strengthen and lead community benefit organizations.

Humanics Philanthropy Project: To prepare individuals for leadership in


philanthropic organizations and develop the next generation of philanthropists in
the Central Valley.

Fresno Regional Foundation: To improve the quality of life in our


community through philanthropy.

Philanthropy Project
• Beginnings
– In January 2007, the Fresno Regional Foundation partnered
with our American Humanics Program by allowing students
enrolled in Philanthropy and Grant Making an opportunity to
re-grant $8,000 over a multi-year process.

• Leveraging
– In December 2007, Campus Compact and Fidelity® Charitable
Gift Fund announced Students4Giving, an initiative that seeks
to inspire young people to become more involved with
philanthropy
• 35 Universities applied for funding
• CSUF is 1 of 5 recipients of $15,000
– Initial seed money bolstered by additional Fidelity®
contributions, $5,000 from AH via a Cohen grant and
individual donations

Objectives
• Students Develop Proficiencies in:
– Principles and Practices of Philanthropy
– Building local/regional partnerships
– Proposal writing
– Soliciting and assessing fund requests from nonprofit
organizations
– Selecting and awarding grants to community benefit
organizations
– Monitoring and assessing outcomes of philanthropic
investments

Coursework
• Spring semester: Philanthropy & Grantmaking
– Learn fundraising principles and practices

– Identify and meet with stakeholders

– Identify community needs, developing a request for proposals to


fund specific projects
– Engage in “student philanthropy,” awarding grants to local
community benefit organizations

Coursework (cont.)
• Fall semester: Grant Writing & Evaluation
– Learn about program evaluation and apply that knowledge
during a site visit to previously funded nonprofit
organizations/programs

– Measure impact of giving from previous Grantmaking


course, reporting outcomes to the community

– Assist a community benefit organization in


researching/preparing grant proposals

Outcomes
• AH Grant Writing:
– More than 150 students have provided Campus and
Community Organizations with grant research and writing
assistance, resulting in approximately $1.9 million in funding
• AH Student Philanthropy Project:
– 107 students from 23 academic majors/disciplines engaged
in project
– Total of $29,000 granted to 10 local Community Benefit

Proposed Philanthropic
Partnership with FRF
• Short-term
– $5,000 annual grant over a five-year term, with an option to
renew the relationship at the end of the period
• The annual contributions, in turn, will be re-granted through
the American Humanics Student Philanthropy Project to
Community Benefit Organizations serving our region.
• Long-term
– Assistance in helping to establish an endowment of at least
$150,000 to assure long-term sustainability of this project
• The endowment’s annual interest will provide the funding for
re-granting through the AH Student Philanthropy Project
