MOTORS
• A simple motor does not require a lot of
materials
• Device that converts electrical energy to
mechanical energy
• Most electric motors operate through the
interaction between the motor's magnetic
field and electric current in a wire winding to
generate force in the form of rotation of a
shaft
DRY CELL
• Provides the electrical energy input
• An electric cell in which the electrolyte is
absorbed in a solid to form a paste,
preventing spillage.
• Type of electric battery, commonly used for
portable electrical devices.
DC MOTORS
• A wire coil placed in a magnetic field and
given a split- ring commutator can be made to
turn electromagnetically producing a DC
motor
• DC motors require a DC power supply
• Most kids’ toys that have motors are DC
motors
• In the picture shown, the split ring A is
where current goes into the coil
• While in the split ring B, is where the
current goes out
COIL
a series of connected pipes in rows, layers, or
windings
BRUSHES
• After one quarter rotation (45°), the gap
between the split rings straddles the metal
contacts
•  Also known as a motor brush
• Is the small part of the motor that
conducts electrical current between the
stationary wires (stator) and the rotating wires
(rotor) of a motor or generator.
• Shortly thereafter, split ring B loses contact
with the brush near the N-pole, and touches
the brush that gets current in
• At the same time, split ring A loses contact
with the far brush and touches the near brush
• The two split rings just swapped places:
• Slit ring B now gets current in and split ring A
now gets current out
• In this way the torque remains the same
direction
TORQUE
• Is a measure of the force that can cause an
object to rotate about an axis
AC MOTORS
• Runs on alternating current
• Means that you need to plug it in a wall outlet
• Alternating current
Differs from direct current in that electricity flows
forward and backward
• Flip flopping of current occurs 60 times per second
• Without brushes ,the wire will be tangled
mess and will eventually stop turning
• Instead of a split ring commutator, slip rings
are attached are attached at the end of the
wire loop
• We use AC motors inside computers, in
electric fans, inside cars and motor cycles
