MAIN INFORMATION

Volyn Oblast is an oblast in north-western Ukraine. Its administrative


center is Lutsk. Kovel is the westernmost town and the last station in
Ukraine of the rail line running from Kiev to Warsaw.

GEOGRAPHY
The area of ​the region is 20143 km², which is 3.3% of the territory of
Ukraine and 19th place among regions of Ukraine. It stretches 185 km
from north to south and 155 km from east to west.
The climate is temperate continental. January average temperature −4 °
C, July temperature +17 ° C. Record air temperatures:
 Highest +38,0 ° C (Vladimir-Volynsky, August 11, 1946);
 Lowest - 38,9 ° C (Vladimir-Volynsky, February 11, 1929);
Volhynia's wealth is the lakes (more than 220), the largest of which are
Svityaz, Puleemske, Turske, Luka.
There are 130 rivers flowing over 3,000 km in Volyn. Largest: Western
Bug; Meadows; Pripyat; Stoch; Turia.

HISTORY
Volyn was once part of Kievan Rus'
before becoming an independent local
principality and an integral part of the
Halych-Volynia, one of Kievan Rus'
successor states. In the 15th century, the
area came under the control of
neighbouring Grand Duchy of Lithuania,
in 1569 passing over to Poland and then
in 1795, until World War I, to the Russian
Empire where it was a part of the
Volynskaya Guberniya. In the interwar
period most of the territory, organized as
Wołyń Voivodeship was under Polish
control.
ADMINISTRATIVE CENTER OF THE VOLYN
OBLAST
Lutsk is a city on the Styr River in
northwestern Ukraine. It is the administrative
center of the Volyn Oblast and the
administrative center of the surrounding
Lutsk Region (district) within the oblast,
though it is not a part of the region. Lutsk
has the status of a city of oblast significance,
equivalent to that of a region.

ECONOMY OF VOLYN REGION
The leading sector of economy of Volyn region
are the industrial and agrarian sectors, which
provide more than half of its total product.
Agriculture specializes in animal husbandry
meat and dairy industry, as well as the
production of grain, sugar beets, vegetables,
potatoes. The village has formed new economic
relations based on private ownership of
property and land. On a non-governmental
basis, almost all agricultural production is now
produced.
More than 200 enterprises are engaged in the
production of industrial products. Leading

TOURISM
Tourism is one of the most promising sectors of importance for the
development of economy of Volyn region.
Volyn region has significant tourist and recreational resources, which are
not used to full extent. That is why the development of tourism is a
priority area of socio-economic and cultural development.
In order to attract tourists,
both domestic and foreign,
the region is working on the
development of tourist
infrastructure, the restoration
of cultural and historical
sites, and the improvement
of the territory around them.
SHATSK NATIONAL NATURAL PARK
One of the famous sights of Volyn region is Shatsky National Nature Park. It is a
unique corner in Ukraine, combining healing air, majestic forests, sandy beaches and
silver water of lakes. Shatsky Nature Park is a good place for a quiet and peaceful
holiday in nature.
The park was established in 1983 in Shatsk district of Volyn region. Now its area
covers more than 49 thousand hectares. The main goal is to protect the Shatsk Lakes.
Shatsk National Nature Park is included in the UNESCO list of biosphere reserves.
OLYTSKY CASTLE
Olytsky Castle is a castle in
Olytsia of Volyn region that
has been owned by the
Radziwill family for
centuries. The first in the
territory of modern Ukraine

THE PRIPYAT-STOKHID NATIONAL NATURE PARK
The Pripyat-Stokhid National Nature
Park was created on August 13, 2007,
which united all the protected objects
of the Lyubeshiv district. The total area
of the park is 39315,5 ha.
Pripyat-Stokhid National Nature Park
takes its name from two rivers flowing
in its territory.
Forty-two species of plants listed in the
Red Book of Ukraine grow in the park.
There is also a rare fauna: eighty-four
species of red-book species.
THE MUSEUM OF LESYA UKRAINKA
The museum of the famous Ukrainian poetess
Lesya Ukrainka in the village of Kolodyazhny
Kovelsky district was opened on July 10, 1949 in
the manor, purchased by her father PA Kosach in
1868. From 1882 to 1907 Les Ukrainka lived here
with some breaks. At Kolodyazhny she began her
literary activity, wrote many poetic works that
were included in the treasury of Ukrainian and
world literature.
THE CITY OF BERESTECHKO
The history of Berestechka dates back to the
Bronze Age, when the first settlements began
to appear on the local territory. The city of
Berestetsky also remembered the city, in
honor of the victory in which the Poles built
one of the landmarks - the Holy Trinity Church,
which still amazes its majesty every visitor.
The Holy Trinity Cathedral, erected in the 20th
century, survived many years - under Soviet
rule it was used as a warehouse, and only in
the late 90's began the reconstruction of the
building. This church is one of the largest in
Ukraine, and includes Main and Underground
temples.

LUTSK UPPER CASTLE
Lutsk Upper Castle is the central building
of Lutsk State Historical and Cultural
Reserve "Old Town".
Built by the last Grand Duke of Galicia-
Volyn principality Dmitry Lubart in 1340-
1383, the castle served as his residence.
Over time, the castle became a favorite
place of stay of Grand Duke of Lithuania
Vitovt. It was here in the winter of 1429
that Vytautas received diplomatic
embassies and monarchs from the
countries of Central and Eastern Europe at
the congress, who solved the most
important problems of interstate relations.
HOLY TRINITY CATHEDRAL
Holy Trinity Cathedral in Lutsk is
one of the central and largest
religious buildings in the city. Its
golden domes can be seen from
many remote places of Lutsk, and
the melody of nine bells is heard
from almost every corner of the
city. Visiting the cathedral during
worship, it is easy to feel the
pacification and peace of mind,
enjoying the beauty and
craftsmanship of the rich interior
paintings, as well as the wonderful
singing of the church chamber
choir.
SAINT PETER AND PAUL CATHEDRAL
The Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral and its
Jesuit college are national landmarks in Lutsk. The
church and college were built for the Society of
Jesus of Lutsk in the 17th century. The cathedral is
the main church in the Roman Catholic Diocese of
Lutsk, the college part of the National university of
Food Technologies.
