Traditional Spilling Excess Water
during Extreme Floods
1. Fully Gated Dams
- Very expensive for extreme Floods Jamming
- Electrical or Mechanical Failures

2. Free Flow Spillway

Fusegate Spillways
Fusegates  are an innovative spillway control
technology, which consists of free standing blocks (the
Fusegates) set side by side on a flattened spillway sill.
The Fusegate blocks act as a fixed weir most of the time
and operate independently without any remote control
or energy source only in case of excessive flood
conditions.

.
Characteristics and Benefits of Fusegate
1.With more than 150 applications around the world ranging from 0.9 m to

9 m in height,
2. The Fusegate System has gained significant international recognition
over the past few years as a reliable spillway control system.
3.The system is typically used to increase spillway discharge capacity
and/or reservoir storage Capacity.
4.Standing blocks, which are set on th spillway sill and designed to tip off
automatically and consecutively in case of extreme flood events.

Summer 2018, residents in Baghdad awoke to something they had never seen
before: they could walk across the Tigris River from bank to bank, This
alarming situation caused confusion and a search for answers . Many Iraqis pointed at
Turkey, arguing that the massive reservoir of Ilisu Dam was stealing the water, and
activists on social media called for a boycott of Turkish goods. But the Ilisu
had not yet begun to be filled

be $ 1.52 billion .

The dimensions of the Ilisu project

Ilisu is part of the South-East Anatolia Project (GAP) Located at the Tigris river 65 km
upstream of the Iraqi border. A rockfill dam with a length of 1820 m and a height of
135 m will create a reservoir with a maximum volume of 10.4 billion m3 and a
surface area of 313 km2. The Ilisu power station will have a
capacity of 1,200 MW. The costs are estimated to
GAP(South-East Anatolia Project)
- GAP include improving the level of income and life quality of local
population by utilizing region’s resources,

- GAP includes 22 dams, 19 hydraulic power plants and irrigation

investments covering 1.8 million hectares of land in ET Basin.

- The total installed capacity of hydraulic power plants would be

7476 MW ,with annual energy production of 27 billion
kilowatt- hours.

- Once the GAP is completed, its reservoirs are supposed to produce

27,300 GWh of power per year, and irrigate a land area of

17,600 km2.

- GAP's total price tag is supposed to be $ 32 billion
