ESTIMATION OF

MACHINING TIME
MACHINING PARAMETERS

• Cutting Speed, V
• Feed, f
• Depth of cut, s

Problems:

1) Calculate the cutting speed in machining a workpiece of 200mm

dia. Rotating at a speed of 100rpm

2) Calculate the required RPM of a work of 100mm dia. To provide a

cutting speed of 50m/min

L = l1 + l +l2
fn – feed per revolution
N – RPM
fm – feed per minute = fn× N
n – number of cuts
T – Machining time for one cut
Tt - Total time = T × n
n = No. of cuts = (D-d) / 2s
MACHINING TIME FOR FACING

 Facing is used to reduce the length of the Job

 Machining Time per cut ,T= L / (fn N)
Where, L = D/2 for solid jobs
= (Do – Di) /2 for Hollow jobs
Total Machining Time, Tt = T × n
D/2
where, n = (Li – Lf) / s

Cutting tool
Problems:
1) Calculate the machining time to face a w/p of 72mm diameter, if
the spindle speed is 80 rpm and cross-feed is 0.3mm/rev
2) A 150mm long, 12mm diameter SS rod is being reduced in
diameter to 11.5mm by turning on a lathe. The spindle rotates at
400rpm and the tool is travelling at an axial speed of 200 mm/min.
Calculate the time taken for cutting.
3) Find the time required for one complete cut on a w/p of 350mm
long and 50mm diameter. The cutting speed is 35m/min and the
feed is 0.5mm/rev
